Civil War Talk to Spotlight Forgotten Battle in the Shenandoah Valley

Published

on

On the evening of November 12, local history lovers will have a chance to step back into a dramatic chapter of the Civil War. The Warren Rifles Museum, located at 95 Chester Street in Front Royal, will host a special presentation at 7 p.m. on the Battle of Wapping Heights, also known as the Battle of Manassas Gap. The event will feature Civil War historian Aaron Siever of Aaron’s Civil War Travels LLC.

Siever, known for his engaging talks and deep knowledge of the Civil War, will guide attendees through the events of July 23, 1863, when Union and Confederate forces clashed in Warren County at the tail end of General Robert E. Lee’s retreat from Gettysburg.

This battle may not be as well-known as Gettysburg, but it played a key role in the movements that followed.

The Battle of Wapping Heights occurred as Union troops under General George G. Meade tried to cut off Lee’s retreat by pushing through Manassas Gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their goal was to catch the Confederate army from behind before it could slip away into the Shenandoah Valley.

The November 12 talk promises to offer more than just a battle summary. Siever will explore the personal stories of soldiers, the geography that shaped the fight, and the lasting impact on the Shenandoah Valley. The Warren Rifles Museum, home to Civil War artifacts and exhibits, provides a fitting setting for the evening.

The event is open to the public, and local residents are encouraged to attend. Whether you’re a Civil War enthusiast or just curious about the region’s history, the talk offers a chance to learn about a lesser-known battle that unfolded right in our backyard.
