Downtown Front Royal Encourages Holiday Shoppers to Go Local with “Brag Bag Contest”

Published

on

In a season often dominated by “Black Friday” deals from national chain stores, Downtown Front Royal Inc. is leading a spirited push to help local shoppers turn their attention—and their wallets—toward the heart of their own community.

As part of a nationwide movement that began 15 years ago with American Express’s launch of Small Business Saturday, local merchants and organizers kicked off their own version of the shop-local celebration on Saturday, November 29, with more festivities planned for every Saturday through December 20. The initiative aims to keep holiday spending close to home by spotlighting independent businesses that give downtown Front Royal its unique charm.

According to national organizers, Small Business Saturday was created to “encourage consumers to shop at local, independent retailers and restaurants during the busy holiday season,” with the added benefit that “money spent at small businesses tends to stay within the community.”

Locally, that idea is coming to life in a cheerful and interactive way through the Brag Bag Contest, a campaign encouraging shoppers to show off their support for Front Royal’s downtown merchants in a fun and social media-friendly format.

How It Works:

Each Saturday, shoppers can participate by:

  • Shopping at any downtown merchant
  • Taking a photo of their shopping bag—aka their “Brag Bag.”
  • Tagging the local business they visited and @DowntownFrontRoyalInc on social media
  • Using the hashtag #BragBagContest

Each post counts as an entry in the Holiday Giveaway taking place on December 20, with prizes going out just in time for Christmas. The more Saturdays participants shop, the more chances they have to win.

There are many options, retail and food-wise, looking up and down East Main St. near its intersection with Chester St.

“Ready … Set … Brag Those Bags!”

Downtown Front Royal Inc. summed it up with holiday enthusiasm: “Grab your friends, stroll Main Street, sip some cocoa, and show off your local love! Let’s make this holiday season the biggest one yet for our amazing small businesses.”

On launch day, the Royal Examiner spotted locals like Chris Laurence, who checked out purchases with shop owner Ellen Aders, and “Taffy” Mabe, who showed off her golden bag while browsing gifts for pet lovers. Up and down Main Street, windows sparkled with holiday displays, offering everything from handmade ornaments to cozy winterwear and gourmet treats.

Santa Weighs In

Even Santa Claus himself gave the local initiative a nod of approval after learning about the Brag Bag Contest. A quick check-in with the North Pole’s resident workshop confirmed that both elves and reindeer agreed: supporting local businesses keeps the season magical for everyone.

Santa’s endorsement included every remaining Saturday before Christmas—December 6, 13, and 20—as perfect opportunities for families to shop downtown and support the small businesses that keep Front Royal’s community thriving.

As downtown Front Royal glows with holiday lights and festive cheer, shoppers are encouraged to skip the crowds and the shipping delays and instead explore what their hometown has to offer.

For more information, visit @DowntownFrontRoyalInc on Facebook or check out participating businesses in person on Main Street. Whether you’re grabbing stocking stuffers or searching for the perfect gift, there’s no better time to support your neighbors—and maybe win a prize in the process.
