Leilani Ann “Lonnie” Monahan, aged 87, passed away on July 10, 2026. True to her generous spirit and lifelong desire to help others, Lonnie made the selfless final decision to donate her body to science. Born on September 28, 1938, in Winona, Minnesota, Lonnie lived a vibrant life marked by entrepreneurship, groundbreaking animal advocacy, and a legendary tenure of public service.

Lonnie served her community with unwavering dedication as a Warren County Magistrate from October 1987 until July 2021. For nearly 34 years, she was a steady, respected presence in the local legal system. Her sharp intellect and commitment to public service were matched only by her entrepreneurial drive. Over her lifetime, she co-owned Monahan Transportation in Minnesota, and later brought her business acumen to Virginia, where she successfully opened and operated the local business, Little Red Fender, along with several others.

While she served the public by day, Lonnie’s true heart belonged to the vulnerable, the sick, and the forgotten animals of her community. She was a pioneering animal advocate who volunteered countless hours and poured her own financial resources into saving sick and injured animals in Warren County. When local county budgets were denied or couldn’t cover critical medical needs, Lonnie stepped in to fund and arrange life-altering care for Animals picked up by Warren County Animal Control—such surgeries included eye removals, leg amputations, spays, neuters, and complex procedures.

To create systemic change, she founded Neuter Now, Inc a local non-profit dedicated to providing vital medical care and managing Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs for community stray cats. Her trailblazing efforts caught the region’s attention, earning her features in local publications and a prominent headline in The Washington Post for her TNR work. In 2011, her monumental impact was officially recognized when she received a prestigious award from the Virginia Animal Control Association for her public service to community animals. Lonnie spent countless volunteer hours at our local Petco helping promote animals available for adoption.

Lonnie was a fiercely independent woman with a compassionate heart. She was preceded in death by her beloved sons and daughter. Her memory, strength, and legacy of kindness will be carried on in her family and friends and anyone who was lucky enough to know Leilani “Lonnie” Monahan

A Celebration of Life will be held on her birthday, September 28th 2026, at 5:00 PM at Lifepoint Church, 1111 N. Shenandoah Avenue, Front Royal, VA.

Chaplain Roger Vorous will lead the service. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and bring their favorite funny stories, as well as memories of Lonnie’s deep compassion, wisdom, and trademark wit. Light refreshments will be available as we gather to celebrate a remarkable life beautifully lived.

Memorial donations can be made to Lonnie’s non-profit that has helped so many animals in our community over the years: Neuter Now, Inc., C/O Law Office of David Crump, PO Box 1754, Front Royal, VA 22630
