Legislative Update

5 quick things

As legislative work gears up in the 115th Congress, I wanted to share a few photos with you from some of the recent stops I’ve made in the Sixth District as well as a bill that passed the House of Representatives last week.

1) Keeping On Track: This weekend, I attended the opening of Liberty University’s brand new indoor track facility. It’s quite impressive! It was also good to see Megan Lucas, CEO of the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance — Megan and her team are doing great work every day to help bring economic development to our area.

2) Back To School: Students at Chelsea Academy in Front Royal welcomed me to their classroom where they are currently reading Shakespeare’s Henry IV. I enjoyed spending time with these bright, young students! Did you know that the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., a block from the U.S. Capitol, is home to the world’s largest Shakespeare collection?

3) Meet Buddy : The Virginia Wildlife Center in Waynesboro is home to a number of critters that have been saved from illness and injury. Buddy the Eagle (pictured) is one of the better known residents. I appreciate Ed Clark and his staff taking the time to show me around the facility and discuss the conservation work they are doing.

4) Making Things: Manufacturing remains an important part of our economy in the Sixth District. Recently, I had the opportunity to tour AMG Manufacturing, Inc. in Lynchburg. They manufacture a wide variety of products, including new extendable trailers (pictured).

5) No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion: However stark Americans’ differences of opinion may be on the matter of abortion, generally even here there has been long, bipartisan agreement that federal taxpayer funds should not be used to fund this practice. The Hyde Amendment has prohibited the federal funding of abortions since 1976, and it has been renewed with few changes for over 40 years, supported by Congresses controlled by both parties and Presidents from both parties. Last week, the House passed the No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act to make the Hyde Amendment permanent. Watch this video or check out my weekly column to learn more about this important bill.
