Betty “Janie” Jane Wharton

Janie was born January 9, 1948, in Front Royal, Virginia, the daughter of the late Ray and Mary Saffell. She was also predeceased by her brother, Michael Saffell.

Before her retirement, Janie worked for the American Petroleum Institute in Washington, D.C., for 43 years. She was an avid bowler and a member of the Thursday Senior League. On any given Friday and Saturday night, Janie could be found dancing away at the Front Royal Moose Lodge, full of laughs and smiles. Janie loved watching soap operas, reality TV, and her beloved Washington Commanders in her spare time.

Janie leaves behind to cherish her memory: her husband, Lewis “Chuck” E. Wharton of 10 years; her daughter, Randy Knight of Bentonville; her step-daughters, Lisa Williams and Greg of Front Royal; her step-granddaughters, Amy Mawyer and Timothy of Strasburg; two loving step-granddaughters, Emma Mawyer and Harper Mawyer of Strasburg; numerous cousins; and her adored cat, Sassy.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Janie’s life on Friday, September 13, at 11:00 a.m., with a graveside service in Bennett’s Chapel Cemetery, Front Royal, Virginia, with Sammy Campbell officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Front Royal Moose Lodge, 1340 John Marshall Highway, Front Royal, Virginia 22630.
