The benefits of cheerleading
Cheerleading used to literally be a sideline event but today, this is no longer the case. This activity now takes center stage and is recognized as a high energy, demanding sport. If you or your child wants to start cheering, here are some of the benefits that can be gained by participating.
Strength and endurance
Cheerleading combines aspects of gymnastics, dance and acrobatics, which keeps participants in great shape. Each routine is a short but intense cardiovascular workout and the stunts that look so graceful and effortless take incredible physical strength.
Coordination
Cheerleaders have to be in the right place at the right time. If they’re not, it could be disastrous and dangerous for the team member who may go crashing to the ground instead of getting caught and brought to the floor safely. By learning to control their bodies, cheerleaders make sure that each routine is perfectly and safely executed.
Teamwork
To make the magic of a given routine come to life, squad members must learn to trust each other. Being part of a team can build self-esteem and create lifelong friendships, while also encouraging leadership roles in other aspects of the athlete’s life.
In addition to the above, cheerleaders develop flexibility, grace, rhythm and agility. Not for the faint of heart, this sport is as demanding as it is exhilarating. Ready to sign up? Classes are typically offered to those who are five and older.
