10 Years of Music, Mountains & Memories: The Appaloosa Music Festival returns Aug. 30–31
This Labor Day weekend, the rolling fields of Skyline Ranch Resort will once again come alive with the sound of fiddles, banjos, and foot-stomping rhythms as the Appaloosa Music Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary. Founded by Front Royal natives and Scythian frontmen Alex and Dan Fedoryka, the two-day Americana, bluegrass, Celtic, and folk festival has grown into a nationally recognized event — but its future depends on the support of both visitors and locals.
Dan Fedoryka, who grew up in Front Royal, said his vision for Appaloosa was inspired by a lack of live music opportunities in his hometown. “I’d never gone to a live show until I was 15,” he recalled. “We have so much beauty here, so I thought, let’s give people a reason to come for the music but stay for the mountains and the stars.”
Since its debut in 2015, the festival has drawn crowds from across the country, with attendees from 40 states last year alone. About 40% of the audience now comes from outside Virginia, another 30% from Front Royal, and the rest from the D.C. metro area.
Despite that reach, Fedoryka says local attendance could be stronger. “There’s no guarantee of an 11th Appaloosa,” he said. “Every year makes a difference. If you’ve been saying, ‘I’ll go next year,’ this is the year to come.”
This year’s lineup features nationally acclaimed headliners, including The Steel Wheels, JigJam, The Screaming Orphans, and Driftwood, alongside Fedoryka’s own high-energy Celtic folk-rock band, Scythian. The music runs on two adjacent stages, so concertgoers never miss a beat.
The festival also offers an array of food trucks, local craft beverages, including a signature Appaloosa IPA from Vibrissa Beer, a cider from Old Town Cidery, and wines from Rappahannock Cellars, plus artisan vendors and a free kids’ zone. Children 12 and under are admitted free, and the kid-friendly area, complete with bounce houses and face painting, is sponsored by Luke’s Foundation Solutions.
Appaloosa is as much about participation as performance. Through the Appaloosa Blue Ridge Arts Foundation, the festival hosts free music workshops all weekend, encouraging young musicians to learn from professionals. Fedoryka notes one standout success: “We had kids start out on our small stage who are now kicking off the festival on the main stage.”
Fedoryka says putting on the festival is no small feat or expense. “Before we even turn the lights on, the generators alone are $20,000,” he said. “We’re essentially building a city in the middle of a field.” Sponsors like Warren County and Discover Front Royal now help cover about a quarter of the budget, but ticket sales remain critical.
Camping options, from car camping to RV sites, allow festivalgoers to stay on-site and enjoy music without worrying about the drive home.
The Appaloosa Music Festival runs Saturday, Aug. 30, and Sunday, Aug. 31, at Skyline Ranch Resort. Gates open at 11 a.m., with music starting at noon each day. Tickets are available at AppaloosaFestival.com, with prices increasing as the festival approaches.
“Appaloosa is about music, community, and the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley,” Fedoryka said. “It’s something special, and it’s right here in our backyard.”
