$17 Million in Federal Funding Secured for I-81 Upgrades Through Virginia’s Sixth District

Interstate 81, one of the busiest and most vital transportation routes in Virginia, is set to receive a major boost. Congressman Ben Cline (R-VA) announced that the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) bill, recently passed by the House Appropriations Committee, includes $17 million in federal funding for improvements to the I-81 corridor. The funding, requested and supported by Cline as a member of the committee, is aimed at addressing long-standing safety and congestion concerns along the interstate.

The heavily traveled I-81 corridor runs directly through Virginia’s Sixth District, a region that sees more than 12 million commercial trucks each year transporting over $300 billion in goods. The highway also serves millions of commuters and travelers annually, making it a crucial economic and logistical artery for both Virginia and the nation.

Originally built more than five decades ago, I-81 has struggled to keep pace with increased traffic and freight demands. A 2018 state report identified the corridor as in urgent need of modernization, particularly in terms of safety improvements and increased capacity. While the Commonwealth of Virginia has made strides through its Interstate 81 Corridor Improvement Program (CIP), federal investment has remained a key piece of the puzzle.

“This funding will help reduce congestion, improve safety, and make the highway more efficient for the millions who rely on it,” said Congressman Cline in a statement. “I’m proud to deliver these federal dollars for our communities along the I-81 corridor.”

The new funding is expected to support key upgrades, including potential widening of the interstate from two to three lanes in critical stretches. These changes are designed not only to improve daily traffic flow but also to provide much-needed space for emergency response vehicles, reduce accident risks, and support more reliable freight movement.

As local business owners, truck drivers, and families across the region know all too well, travel delays along I-81 are becoming more frequent—and more costly. Disruptions affect everything from on-time deliveries to emergency response times, as well as everyday commutes for area residents.

“Whether it’s commuters, families, or truck drivers moving goods through the Valley, Virginians deserve a safer and more reliable interstate,” Cline said. “I’ll keep working toward real solutions to make that happen.”

This $17 million federal allocation is part of a broader bipartisan effort to reinvest in America’s aging infrastructure—an area that many believe has long been overdue for attention. For the Sixth District, which includes communities from Rockingham to Roanoke, the improvements to I-81 are not just about convenience—they’re about economic growth, public safety, and regional stability.

More detailed plans about how the funding will be applied are expected to emerge as the bill moves forward and as coordination continues between federal and state transportation agencies.
