Norman H. “Norm Henry” Schmidt (1950 – 2023)

Mr. Norman H. “Norm Henry” Schmidt, 72, of Greencastle, PA, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Born January 9, 1950, in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late William and Matilda (Schrurer) Schmidt.

Norman attended Catholic School for his elementary and middle school years and then graduated from Franklin High School in Reisterstown, MD, with the class of 1968. He studied radio at Career Academy, School of Broadcasting, where he graduated early by obtaining his first radio job.

He married the love of his life, Mrs. Lori (Minnick) Schmidt, on December 22, 1991.

Norm got his first on-air job at WFTR in Front Royal, VA, while he was still in school. He moved on to WFFV- Front Royal/Middletown, VA, and also worked at the A&P store. He then moved to WEPM AM/ WESM FM in Martinsburg, WV. He spent 10 years at WGLL-WRCV 92.1 Gold in Mercersburg/Greencastle, where he became known as “Norm Henry.” He hosted the “Golden Oldies Hour” for many years before moving on to WAFY (KEY103) Frederick MD for another 13 years. He then tried his hand at car sales with Buchanan Auto Park before landing his last radio job with his good friend Lou Scally at WJEJ, Hagerstown, MD. While working at WJEJ, he also delivered Krumpee’s Donuts for several years before Alzheimer’s robbed him of his capability to continue his beloved radio profession.

Norman was a longstanding member of the First Christian Church in Hagerstown, MD, where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon. Many years ago, he was the founder and president of the Hagerstown Computer Club that met at Haven Lutheran Church.

In addition to his wife, Norman is survived by his children Natasha Schmidt of Strasburg, VA, Nicole Schmidt of Mercersburg, PA, Scott Reed of Johnstown, PA, Matthew Reed of Camp Hill, PA, Michael Reed of Greencastle, PA, granddaughters, Evangelina Schmidt and Mia Reed; and sisters Anita McCusker of Westminster, MD and Rita Tolbert of Reisterstown, MD.

Service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave, Hagerstown, MD, with Rev. Dr. David T Britt officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services in the church.

Elsie Jane Brown, 86, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2024, at Warren Memorial Hospital.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main Street, Front Royal, with Sammy Campbell officiating.  Burial will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Brown was born in Front Royal on October 2, 1937, to the late William and Amanda Heflin Estes.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Pvt. 1st Class William M. Brown; granddaughter, Stacey Michelle Brown; four brothers, William Estes, Giles Estes, Clayton Estes, and Wallace Estes; and seven sisters, Betty Dodson, Rena Vencil, Barbara Thompson, Leona Pullen, Virginia Moore, Margaret Brister and Helen East.

Survivors include her son, Emmett Brown of Front Royal; two daughters, Rhonda Brown of Front Royal and Debra Brown-Taft of Glendale, Arizona; sister, Joan Atchinson of Alexandria, Virginia; four grandchildren, Richard Dawson, Heather Brown, Daniel Brown, and Kaiden Brown; five great-grandchildren, Gavin Garber, Avani Garber, Nevaeh Brown, Axel brown and Braden Dawson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Michael Garber, Kevin Roberts, Jimmy Melvin, Jeff Fincham, Dylan Fincham, and Rodney Williams will be pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, May 30, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m.

JoAnne Heflin (1965 – 2024)

JoAnne Heflin, 58, of Woodbridge, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at her care home, A.J. Residence.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Rivermont Baptist Church, 575 Catlett Mountain Road, Front Royal, with the Rev. Michael Lynn officiating.  Burial will follow at Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick, Virginia.

JoAnne was born in Front Royal on June 7, 1965, to the late Hoover and Ruth Davis Heflin.  She formerly participated in the Special Olympics and was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church and the Bluebird Club at Rivermont Baptist Church.

Survivors include her four brothers, David Heflin, Eric Heflin, Gary Heflin, and John Heflin; three sisters, Gwen Lynn, Linda Daly, and Nancy Ross; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jo’s favorite colors were red and purple.  Please wear these colors to the service in honor of her.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 31, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main Street, Front Royal.

Anthony Edward “Tony” Casarotti (1951 – 2024)

Anthony Edward “Tony” Casarotti, 73, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at his home after suffering from a lengthy neurodegenerative disease.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 29, at 2:30 p.m. at Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Front Royal with The Reverend Daniel Gee officiating. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal. Following the internment, a fellowship meal will be shared at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Front Royal.

Tony was born March 14, 1951, in Front Royal, Virginia, to parents Ernest and Mildred Casarotti.

Tony was a dedicated employee of Warren Memorial Hospital’s radiology department for 40 years, where he established many wonderful relationships with hospital staff and patients alike.

He was an avid reader, history lover, and music enthusiast. Tony pursued many hobbies, such as painting military miniatures and collecting toy memorabilia, but is most likely known for his love of the guitar. He enjoyed learning new techniques and styles and played with many local musicians.

Tony was a lifelong member of Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church.

Surviving is his wife of 44 years, Jane; daughters, Erin Casarotti and Emily Casarotti Straightiff; three grandchildren, Elijah Shelton, Sadie Straightiff, and Maeve Strightiff; as well his siblings, Greogory F. Casarotti, Michael F. Casarotti, and Donna M. Casarotti.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 28, from 6-8 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home.

John Alan Welch (1947 – 2024)

John Alan Welch, 76, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at 12:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, with Sammy Campbell officiating. The inurnment will be private.

John was born November 5, 1947, in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of the late Irvin Highland and Hazel Marie Caulk Welch.

He graduated from Philadelphia College of Textile & Science in 1970. John worked at Avtex Fibers as Department Head for 19 years and owned and operated Welch’s Cleaning Service for over 25 years.

He coached for several years for T-Ball, Little League, Babe Ruth, and Midget Football. He was a past president of Babe Ruth and the Warren County Boosters Club. John was a past Board of Directors member for the Front Royal Credit Union. He took great pride in his lawn and the 2006 Beautification of Front Royal Committee Award he earned. John loved to garden and would bless others with his harvest.

John’s greatest joys in life were his family and his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Surviving is his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen Welch; one son, John “Mickey” Welch and wife Lisa of Nashville, Tennessee; two daughters, Diane Santmyers and husband Donald Santmyers, Jr. of Front Royal and Karen Williams and husband Jared of Front Royal; one sister, Christine Welch of Herndon; one brother, Robert Irvin Welch and wife Denese of Jamestown, North Carolina; and six grandchildren whom he deeply loved, Kacey Stives, Ethan Welch, Kiersten Stives, Kaitlyn Welch, Ryan Williams, and Gage Williams.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 29, from 11:00 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Mary Elizabeth Poole, 79, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, passed away at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

Mary’s funeral service will be held at noon on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W Main St. Front Royal, Virginia 22630, with Sammy Campbell officiating. The family invites guests to visit one hour before the service. Following all services, there will be an entombment at Panorama Memorial Gardens.

Mary was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 14, 1944, to the late Elmer Russell Shiflett and Mary Elizabeth Rowe. She was also preceded in death by her step-mom, Peggy Shiflett; her brother, Darrell Shiflett; and her son-in-law, Charles Foster.

Surviving Mary are her children, Laura Foster, Jeff Poole, and Jessica Holzer (with spouse, Bobby); her siblings, James “Jimmie” Shiflett (with spouse, Kathy), Wayne Shifflette (with spouse, Linda), Frank Shiflett (with spouse, Nancy), Diana Shiflett Robbins, and Elmer “Rusty” Shiflett Jr. (with spouse, Michelle); her grandchildren, Brittany Foster, Charles Foster Jr. (with spouse, Cassy), and Zack Wallace (with spouse, Erin); her great-grandchildren, Gavin Ranck, Addyson Knight, Aubree Knight, Caydence Foster, Carter Foster, Cali Foster, and Ainsley Poole; and numerous nieces and nephews, family and friends.

In her spare time, Mary enjoyed painting and feeding the birds/squirrels in her outdoor garden. Her most cherished time in her later years was spending time with her grandkids.

Bobby Holzer, Charles Foster Jr., Zack Wallace, Gavin Ranck, and Kelly Knight will be pallbearers.

Cody Allen Kanavel (1995 – 2024)

Cody Allen Kanavel, 29, of Front Royal, Virginia, died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 18, 2024.

Cody was born on May 8, 1995, to Tammy Kanavel and Ernest Kanavel III in Harrogate, England. His family relocated to Front Royal, Virginia, in 2002, where Cody attended Warren County Public Schools and graduated from Skyline High School in 2013.

Cody enjoyed cooking, fishing, listening to music, playing the guitar, attending rock concerts with his brothers and friends, and spending time with his family around a good fire. Cody loved nature and had a great appreciation for animals, particularly his cat, “Dr. Dre.”  Not only was he an animal whisperer, but he was also an amazing “Uncle Coco.” He adored his niece, Kendyll, and nephew, Hoyt, and looked forward to meeting the newest addition to the Kanavel family later this month.

At 6’4, he was noticed any time he entered a room. But his smile, laugh, sense of humor, and love for others were one of a kind – something that will truly be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.

Cody is survived by his parents, Tammy Kanavel of Front Royal, VA, and Ernest James “Jim” Kanavel III and Kristin Kanavel of Shenandoah Junction, WV; his brothers, Shawn Sadler (Leslie) and Kip Kanavel; his niece, Kendyll; nephew, Hoyt; and paternal grandparents, Ernest James Kanavel Jr. and Marian of Levittown, PA.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Philip and Barbara Montgomery and Stanley Brock Jr. of Dexter, Missouri.

A memorial service at Maddox Funeral Home will be on Sunday, May 26, at 2 p.m.

A private celebration of life will take place at a later date.
