Jeremy Ritenour (1975 – 2023)

Jeremy Ritenour, 48, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2023 at home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 7, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., Front Royal, with Sammy Campbell officiating. Family night will be held on December 6 from 6-8 p.m.

Jeremy was born on March 1, 1975, in Winchester, Virginia, to Kip Ritenour and Melanie Pomeroy. He was preceded in death by many adoring grandparents.

Surviving Jeremy, along with his parents, are his loving wife, Melissa Ritenour; his son, Jalen Ritenour; his step-sons, Aaron and Tyler; his siblings, Kelcie Taylor (and her family), Tyler and Corey Ritenour; his uncle, Gary Ritenour; his aunt, Hope Smithwick (and her family); and numerous extended family members.

He was a 1993 Warren County High School graduate and a Senior Manager for TruGreen. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing with his son, Jalen, his Dad, and many friends.

He was a huge UVA fan and had a strong love for his family and community. He was involved in baseball and softball as both a player and coach for over 40 years. He devoted his time to coaching his son, Jalen. He began his coaching career in tee ball, little league, and travel ball, continuing until becoming the JV head coach for Skyline High School. He loved his baseball kids and their families, but most of all, he was a proud father to Jalen.

He adored his wife and treasured his mother. His sense of humor always lit up a room. He will be forever missed by his family and many friends.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dallas Campbell, Dave Rankin, Jason Ruby, Jason Thorpe, Chad Barnett, Rick Walker, Jason Smedley, Jeff Lewis and Rusty Durham.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Front Royal Little League, Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue, and For the Cats Sake.

John Alan Welch (1947 – 2024)

John Alan Welch, 76, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at 12:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, with Sammy Campbell officiating. The inurnment will be private.

John was born November 5, 1947, in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of the late Irvin Highland and Hazel Marie Caulk Welch.

He graduated from Philadelphia College of Textile & Science in 1970. John worked at Avtex Fibers as Department Head for 19 years and owned and operated Welch’s Cleaning Service for over 25 years.

He coached for several years for T-Ball, Little League, Babe Ruth, and Midget Football. He was a past president of Babe Ruth and the Warren County Boosters Club. John was a past Board of Directors member for the Front Royal Credit Union. He took great pride in his lawn and the 2006 Beautification of Front Royal Committee Award he earned. John loved to garden and would bless others with his harvest.

John’s greatest joys in life were his family and his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Surviving is his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen Welch; one son, John “Mickey” Welch and wife Lisa of Nashville, Tennessee; two daughters, Diane Santmyers and husband Donald Santmyers, Jr. of Front Royal and Karen Williams and husband Jared of Front Royal; one sister, Christine Welch of Herndon; one brother, Robert Irvin Welch and wife Denese of Jamestown, North Carolina; and six grandchildren whom he deeply loved, Kacey Stives, Ethan Welch, Kiersten Stives, Kaitlyn Welch, Ryan Williams, and Gage Williams.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 29, from 11:00 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee, 38105.

Mary Elizabeth Poole (1944 – 2024)

Mary Elizabeth Poole, 79, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, passed away at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

Mary’s funeral service will be held at noon on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W Main St. Front Royal, Virginia 22630, with Sammy Campbell officiating. The family invites guests to visit one hour before the service. Following all services, there will be an entombment at Panorama Memorial Gardens.

Mary was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 14, 1944, to the late Elmer Russell Shiflett and Mary Elizabeth Rowe. She was also preceded in death by her step-mom, Peggy Shiflett; her brother, Darrell Shiflett; and her son-in-law, Charles Foster.

Surviving Mary are her children, Laura Foster, Jeff Poole, and Jessica Holzer (with spouse, Bobby); her siblings, James “Jimmie” Shiflett (with spouse, Kathy), Wayne Shifflette (with spouse, Linda), Frank Shiflett (with spouse, Nancy), Diana Shiflett Robbins, and Elmer “Rusty” Shiflett Jr. (with spouse, Michelle); her grandchildren, Brittany Foster, Charles Foster Jr. (with spouse, Cassy), and Zack Wallace (with spouse, Erin); her great-grandchildren, Gavin Ranck, Addyson Knight, Aubree Knight, Caydence Foster, Carter Foster, Cali Foster, and Ainsley Poole; and numerous nieces and nephews, family and friends.

In her spare time, Mary enjoyed painting and feeding the birds/squirrels in her outdoor garden. Her most cherished time in her later years was spending time with her grandkids.

Bobby Holzer, Charles Foster Jr., Zack Wallace, Gavin Ranck, and Kelly Knight will be pallbearers.

Cody Allen Kanavel (1995 – 2024)

Cody Allen Kanavel, 29, of Front Royal, Virginia, died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 18, 2024.

Cody was born on May 8, 1995, to Tammy Kanavel and Ernest Kanavel III in Harrogate, England. His family relocated to Front Royal, Virginia, in 2002, where Cody attended Warren County Public Schools and graduated from Skyline High School in 2013.

Cody enjoyed cooking, fishing, listening to music, playing the guitar, attending rock concerts with his brothers and friends, and spending time with his family around a good fire. Cody loved nature and had a great appreciation for animals, particularly his cat, “Dr. Dre.”  Not only was he an animal whisperer, but he was also an amazing “Uncle Coco.” He adored his niece, Kendyll, and nephew, Hoyt, and looked forward to meeting the newest addition to the Kanavel family later this month.

At 6’4, he was noticed any time he entered a room. But his smile, laugh, sense of humor, and love for others were one of a kind – something that will truly be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.

Cody is survived by his parents, Tammy Kanavel of Front Royal, VA, and Ernest James “Jim” Kanavel III and Kristin Kanavel of Shenandoah Junction, WV; his brothers, Shawn Sadler (Leslie) and Kip Kanavel; his niece, Kendyll; nephew, Hoyt; and paternal grandparents, Ernest James Kanavel Jr. and Marian of Levittown, PA.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Philip and Barbara Montgomery and Stanley Brock Jr. of Dexter, Missouri.

A memorial service at Maddox Funeral Home will be on Sunday, May 26, at 2 p.m.

A private celebration of life will take place at a later date.

Shirley “Big Jack” Bailey (1935 – 2024)

Shirley “Big Jack” Bailey, 89, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Winchester Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main Street, Front Royal, with Pastor Joseph Plemmons officiating.

Mr. Bailey was born in Flint Hill, Virginia, to the late Homer and Louemma Roberts Bailey.  He was also preceded in death by his son, Ricky Lee Bailey; brother, Gillis Taliaferro Sr.; and four sisters, Mary Lincoln, Marion Bey, Dorothy Brooks, and Margaret “Polly” Nesby.  He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Army, an Ordained Deacon at Roseville Presbyterian Church in Newark, New Jersey, served on the Good Hope Cemetery Association in Front Royal, Virginia, and was a member of the Spiritual Guardians Quartet that sang at various church events in the Front Royal area.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Velma B. Bailey; son, Mark L. Bailey (Portia); brother, James Taliaferro; four grandchildren, Amanda Bailey, Mark Bailey II, Allison Brumbray (Quinton) and Dana Bailey; two great-grandchildren, Ava Bailey and Aiden Robertson and a host of loving extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Repast will be at First Baptist Church, 14 W. 1st Street, Front Royal, immediately after the service.

Marrley Scott Brown (1943 – 2024)

Marrley Scott Brown, 80, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024, peacefully at home after a short battle with lung cancer.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Willis Chapel Cemetery with Pastor Jeff Thompson officiating. A visitation will occur the evening prior from 6-8 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St. Front Royal, Virginia 22630.

Marrley was born in Marshall, Virginia, on December 23, 1943, to the late James Scott and Katie May Elkins. She was also preceded in death by her son, Matthew Eric Wines; her sister, Helen Scott Wines; and her brother, James Scott.

Surviving Marrley are her son, Mark Anthony Wines; her sister, Barbara Ann Costello; her grandchildren, Jason Allen Wines, Jessica Katlyn Wines, Jacklyn Nichole Wines Elder, Cynthia Lee Wines, and Matthew Eric Wines Jr.; her great-grandchildren, Greyson Stephen Elder and Caden Timothy Elder; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was an avid seamstress and quilter, winning numerous blue ribbons at local fairs. She was passionate about helping the Catholic Pregnancy Center by donating her hand-made baby blankets.

Marrley was lovingly cared for in hospice by her son, Mark Wines, and her nieces, Penny Chadwell Kardis and Dora Lee McMichael.

Larry P. Beahm (1960 – 2024)

Larry P. Beahm, 63, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, Va.

He was born on July 22, 1960, in Page County and was the son of the late Boyd F Beahm and Lamont P Beahm.

He is survived by a daughter, Krista Beahm of Front Royal, and a granddaughter, Kayle Beahm of Luray; brother, Randal Beahm Sr. of Luray; sister, Robin Eye of Waynesboro.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Beahm, and a beloved dog, Shooter.
