Governor Glenn Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin have awarded the prestigious Spirit of Virginia Award to the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association (MVLA). This landmark decision spotlights the importance of historical preservation and education in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This event took place on March 15, 2024, marking the MVLA as the first recipient of the six awards to be given this year.

The MVLA, established as the first national historic preservation organization in the United States, has been at the forefront of preserving George Washington’s iconic home, Mount Vernon. Governed by a vision to maintain and educate about George Washington’s legacy, the MVLA operates without government funding, relying instead on donations and ticket sales. This dedication has made Mount Vernon a pivotal site for learning about Virginia’s history and the broader narrative of the United States.

Governor Youngkin praised the MVLA’s relentless commitment to preservation, emphasizing how their work offers Virginians and visitors an unmatched glimpse into George Washington’s legacy and the rich tapestry of the Commonwealth’s history. First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin highlighted the timing of the award during Women’s History Month as a celebration of the MVLA’s long-standing commitment, initiated by women, to preserve one of Virginia’s most historic homes.

Margaret Hartman Nichols, the 23rd Regent of the MVLA, expressed deep honor in receiving the 2024 Spirit of Virginia Award. She paid tribute to the organization’s founder, Ann Pamela Cunningham, and the successive generations of women who have upheld the spirit of preservation. The MVLA’s ongoing Mansion Revitalization project underscores their enduring commitment to safeguarding George Washington’s home for future generations, embodying the very essence of the Spirit of Virginia.

The Spirit of Virginia Award is a testament to outstanding contributions in various fields, including private industries, education, culture, the arts, and philanthropy within the Commonwealth. The Governor and First Lady’s announcement sets the stage for recognizing more exemplary Virginians throughout the year, with all awardees to be celebrated at a holiday reception at the Virginia Executive Mansion.
