Stay Safe Around Fire Pits This Fall and Winter

Published

on

Fire pits are a favorite for cozy gatherings during cooler months, but they can pose serious risks if not used properly. In 2021 alone, nearly 6,000 people were treated in emergency rooms for injuries caused by fire pits and outdoor heaters. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) also reports that fire pits are responsible for around 10,000 home fires each year.

Recent Recall Highlights Fire Pit Dangers

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recently recalled over 89,000 liquid alcohol-fueled fire pits from Colsen after reports of flame jetting. This dangerous phenomenon occurs when the fire ignites suddenly while refueling, creating a jet-like flame that can cause severe burns.

While wood-burning fire pits are less prone to such issues, they’re not without hazards. Following basic safety guidelines is essential to avoid injuries or property damage.

Fire Pit Safety Tips

  1. Mind the Wind:
Wind can carry sparks into dry leaves, bushes, or nearby structures. In windy conditions, always monitor the fire closely and keep a garden hose or fire extinguisher nearby. Position yourself upwind to avoid inhaling smoke.
  2. Choose the Right Spot:
Always place the fire pit in an open, well-ventilated area. Enclosed spaces like garages or patios can trap smoke or carbon monoxide from gas fire pits, creating serious health risks.
  3. Ensure Stability:
Fire pits should rest on stable, fire-resistant surfaces like bricks or sand. They should not be placed directly on wooden decks or grassy areas. Seating should be kept at least three feet away from the pit to prevent accidental burns.
  4. Burn the Right Materials:
Stick to untreated wood or fire pit-approved fuels. Avoid construction wood, pallets, or other chemically treated materials, as they can release toxic fumes when burned.

A Cozy Evening Without the Risks

Only if used responsibly can a fire pit create warm, memorable moments. By following these safety steps and staying alert, you can enjoy your evenings without worrying about injuries or accidents.
