Virginia Officials Urge Safe Rides Home for Super Bowl LIX

Published

As football fans across Virginia prepare for Super Bowl LIX this Sunday, the Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are urging everyone to plan ahead for a sober ride home.

“We know many people anticipate this game and want to celebrate it,” said Lieutenant Colonel Matt Hanley, Interim Superintendent of the Virginia State Police. “But do not let the celebration turn to tragedy for you or anyone else. Plan a sober ride home, be it a friend or a rideshare program.”

Last year, on Super Bowl Sunday, Virginia recorded 37 alcohol-related crashes, 11 injuries, and one fatality, according to preliminary DMV data. Law enforcement agencies will be actively patrolling to keep roadways safe.

“The biggest win of the night is getting home safely after the big game,” said John Saunders, Director of Public Outreach, Planning and Administration for DMV’s Virginia Highway Safety Office. “There are resources available, whether it’s a designated driver, a rideshare service, or public transportation. Plan ahead and make responsible choices.”

Drinking and driving comes with serious consequences. A DUI arrest can lead to jail time, loss of a driver’s license, vehicle impoundment, and costly fines, attorney’s fees, and increased insurance rates. In some areas of Virginia, these costs can exceed $26,000.

To help ensure a safe night, officials recommend the following:

  • Designate a sober driver before the game begins.
  • Use a taxi, rideshare service, or public transportation if you have been drinking.
  • Always wear a seat belt, the best protection in a crash.
  • If hosting a party, provide non-alcoholic drinks and food for guests. Never let someone drive under the influence.
