It is National Public Lands Day on September 30th! This means that we can enjoy FREE admission at all participating state parks including our very own Shenandoah National Park. The special day was started in 1994 and is sponsored by Toyota Motor North America. The main purpose of National Public Lands Day is to encourage families, friends, students or coworkers to enjoy a day outdoors and give back a little to the land that does so much for us. Giving back could include pulling a few weeds, picking up some trash or simply showing appreciation during a float on the river! During your fun day, be sure to use the hashtags #NPLD or #PublicLandsDay to show off your day of connecting with nature.

If you plan on going to Shenandoah National Park this weekend, be prepared to see the beginning traces of fall colors. Be sure to visit: https://www.nps.gov/shen/index.htm to not only check out scheduled events for National Public Lands Day, but to get updated reports on the current colors every Friday! This feature is such a cool tool to explore. There is even a “mountain view webcam” set up with real time images of the mountain for you to peek at from time to time. Visit the Color Report section of SNP’s website to get a complete education of this year’s predictions of what to expect from the leaves and scientific explanation of how/why leaves change colors. Or, you may call 540-999-3500 and press option 6 to hear the color report read to you. The descriptive language brings the report to life!
