WCPS Bids Farewell to Dr. Chris Ballenger, Welcomes Interim Superintendent

Warren County Public Schools will begin a new chapter in leadership after Superintendent Dr. Chris Ballenger officially resigned from his position this week to accept a new role in South Carolina. The change, made public after the School Board’s executive session Wednesday night, reflects Dr. Ballenger’s decision to move closer to family.

The board formally accepted his resignation during its June 18 work session, with details included in the personnel report addendum. In a statement added to the school system’s official press release, the board expressed its appreciation, noting, “The School Board would like to extend its appreciation to Dr. Chris Ballenger for his leadership and dedicated service to WCPS over the past five years.”

Following the board’s vote, Dr. David Martin was unanimously approved as interim superintendent. Dr. Martin was present at the meeting and made a brief statement after his appointment. A recording of the meeting’s final portion, filmed by WCPS staff, will be available to the public.

Dr. Ballenger joined WCPS in 2020 and has overseen key initiatives in student achievement, capital improvements, and staff development. His departure marks the end of a tenure shaped by both progress and challenges, including navigating the school system through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Martin steps into the interim role with experience in school leadership and is expected to guide the division through the upcoming transition period while the board prepares to search for a permanent superintendent.

Further updates from WCPS are expected as the board begins the next steps in the superintendent selection process.
