How to Spot a Crypto Scam

Published

on

Cryptocurrency started out as an experiment in digital money, but today it’s gone mainstream. According to Security.org, about 65 million American adults now own crypto, and two-thirds of them plan to buy more. But the same things that make cryptocurrency appealing—decentralization, privacy, and limited oversight—also make it a fertile ground for scammers.

If you’re investing or just curious about crypto, watch out for these major red flags:

Demands for crypto payment
A real business or government agency will never ask for Bitcoin or Ethereum. If someone insists you pay in crypto—especially upfront—it’s a scam.

The “investment manager” trick
Scammers pose as professionals offering a one-time chance to multiply your money. They might even provide you with a login for a fake “investment account” that appears to show rising returns while they secretly drain your funds in the background.

Romance scams with a modern twist
Love and crypto don’t mix. If someone you meet on a dating app starts talking about digital coin investments—or asks you to send them crypto—it’s a scam.

Celebrity endorsements that aren’t real
Scammers use AI-generated videos of famous people to promote fake investments. DigWatch reports one man lost $10,000 after “Elon Musk” lured him into a fake website that showed his balance ballooning to $50,000. Remember: Brad Pitt is never going to DM you about Bitcoin.

Corporate impersonators
Fraudsters copy big names like Amazon or FedEx, warning you about “bank fraud” or “cybersecurity risks.” Then they’ll ask for cryptocurrency to “fix” the issue. A legitimate company won’t do this.

The bottom line: if someone is pushing you into crypto payments, especially with pressure tactics or unbelievable returns, it’s almost certainly a scam. Take a step back, double-check the source, and remember—the blockchain may be high-tech, but good old-fashioned caution is still the best defense.
