Cathy Rec Congratulates Gilbert on Federal Appointment, Highlights Stakes in HD-33 Race
With news that Delegate Todd Gilbert has been appointed as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, Cathy Rec, Democratic candidate for Virginia House District 33, responded with congratulations and a renewed focus on the road ahead.

“I would like to congratulate Todd Gilbert on his appointment,” Rec said in a statement issued from Woodstock. “His experience in public service and the law makes him well suited for this important role.”
Gilbert’s appointment marks the end of his time in the General Assembly, where he has served for nearly two decades, most recently as House Minority Leader and former Speaker of the House. With Gilbert not seeking re-election, HD-33 now becomes an open seat in a pivotal election year.
Rec emphasized the significance of this moment for voters: “Voters now have the opportunity to elect a representative who will be focused on delivering real results for our district.”
Her campaign focuses on core issues, including protecting healthcare programs like Medicare and Medicaid (now known as Cardinal Care in Virginia), strengthening local schools, expanding career opportunities, and addressing the rising cost of housing.
“These are everyday issues that matter to the people of District 33,” Rec stated.
As a candidate, Rec has positioned herself as a collaborative problem-solver, pledging to work across party lines. “I will work across the aisle to make meaningful progress on the challenges our communities face,” she said. “Everyone in House District 33 deserves a strong voice who will put people over politics and help ensure a high quality of life for all.”
The general election for Virginia House seats will take place this November, with HD-33 voters choosing a new delegate for the first time in over 15 years.
