Christmas in July Returns to Downtown Front Royal with Festive Fun and Community Spirit

The calendar says summer, but downtown Front Royal is about to feel a lot like Christmas. On Saturday, July 12, the popular Christmas in July festival returns to the gazebo area on Main Street, bringing family fun, local vendors, and even a visit from Santa Claus himself, all with a new twist this year.

What began several years ago as a creative promotion among local shop owners has now become a full-scale summer festival that draws thousands. This year’s event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering activities for all ages while supporting a good cause: Friends of Samuels Library (FOSL), a nonprofit group that works to support and fund the community library.

From a Simple Idea to a Growing Tradition

Sue Laurence of Key Move Properties and White Picket Fence helped launch the original idea alongside local promoter Michael Whitlow. “We turned our shop into a Christmas store for the month of July,” Laurence said. “It started as just Santa, Michael, and me at the gazebo, and it grew from there.”

Over the years, the event has evolved into a full-blown festival, complete with live music, food trucks, artisan vendors, and kid-friendly attractions like a bounce house and face painting, all offered at no cost to families. “Everything for the kids is free,” Laurence noted. “Face painting, bounce houses, it’s a day meant for families to have fun together.”

A Fundraiser with Heart

This year marks the first time the event will also serve as a fundraiser for Friends of Samuels Library, with Sydney Patton, the organization’s newly elected president, stepping in to help coordinate.

“Sue asked me to take over this year,” Patton said with a laugh. “Well, she twisted my arm. But we saw this as a perfect way to bring the community together while supporting our library, which continues to need our help to keep its doors open.”

The Friends group recently hosted a pop-up sale at the library that brought in over $2,000 in sales and nine new members. Events like Christmas in July help the organization continue its work while highlighting the library’s place at the heart of the community.

Vendors, Shopping, and Yes — Santa!

This year’s event will welcome a large group of vendors, including crafters and small businesses from across Virginia, West Virginia, and even North Carolina. “We have repeat vendors from out of state who loved the community feel here and asked to come back,” Patton said.

Beyond shopping, the event also gives families a chance to kick-start their holiday spirit and shopping months ahead of schedule. “A lot of people don’t realize that crafters start building inventory early,” Laurence explained. “If you wait until December, many of the best pieces are long gone.”

And, of course, Santa Claus will be making a special appearance, swinging by downtown as part of his “summer tour.” He’ll be on hand for photos with kids and even pets. “Santa’s planning to drop in for a couple of hours to grab some cookies and say hello,” Laurence added. “He’s not sure if Mrs. Claus or the elves are coming, but he’ll be there.”

More Than Just Main Street

While the event began as a downtown merchant promotion, organizers emphasize that Christmas in July has become a full community event, not just a shopping promotion. “It’s about bringing people together,” said Laurence. “We want to support local businesses across town, not just those on Main Street.”

That inclusive spirit has helped the event gain traction and draw crowds. Last year, over 2,000 people attended the festival, and this year, interest is even higher. “We’re still getting vendor requests,” Patton said. “We’ll be sending out final spot assignments on Wednesday.”

The event’s sponsors include Front Royal Independent Business Alliance (FRIBA), White Picket Fence, Key Move Properties, Friends of Samuels Library, C&C Frozen Treats, Penny Lane Hair Company, and others involved with the Merchants on Main Street group.

Organizers are also quick to thank the Town of Front Royal and community leaders for their support, particularly Lizzie Lewis, who has helped coordinate event logistics. “We couldn’t do this alone,” Laurence said. “It takes a whole town to pull this off.”

Whether you’re looking for handmade gifts, fun activities for the kids, or just an excuse to snap a photo with Santa, Christmas in July offers something for everyone.

So mark your calendars for Saturday, July 12, and head downtown. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., enjoy shade, snacks, shopping, and Santa, all wrapped up in the spirit of giving and community support.
