UPDATED with Results: Democrats vie for 6th District nomination – Republicans for shot at Kaine
Democratic and Republican voters headed to the polls Tuesday, June 12, to select party nominees for U.S. House and Senate races, respectively.
Three Republicans Corey Stewart, Nick Freitas and E.W. Jackson squared off for a shot at unseating Democratic incumbent Senator Tim Kaine.
Four Democratic hopefuls, Peter Volosin, Jennifer Lewis, Charlotte Moore and Sergio Coppola II are vying for their party’s nomination to face Republican nominee Ben Cline to replace retiring Sixth District Republican Bob Goodlatte.
Twenty-six-year incumbent Goodlatte joined an expanding list of Republican incumbents announcing retirements just days after a stunning State result last November that saw Republicans lose 15 of their 16-seat (66-34) House majority. That 16th seat that gave the Republicans a slim 51-49 House majority was retained on a blind draw that kept the Republican incumbent seated in the 4th District after a challenged recount in a razor-tight race.
Debate over implications of the Democratic gains in the State House of Representatives in Virginia – a gain that shocked members of both parties – began quickly with the U.S. Congressional mid-terms on the 2018 political horizon. Many called it a referendum on President Trump, while others disputed that notion and urged caution in drawing broader political conclusions.
But while the debate over blue waves and receding red tides flashing around Donald J. Trump continues, both parties are seeking newer faces to fill electoral voids, as well as ways to protect familiar ones seeking re-election in 2018.
Election results show that in the U. S. Senate GOP Primary, Corey Stewart, a hard-right county official won the race with 136, 499 votes, 45% of the vote statewide. Nick Freitas and E. W. Jackson garnered 43% and 12% of the vote respectively.
In Warren County, 897 votes were cast for Stewart, (45%); 544 for Jackson, E. W. (28%); 503 for Nick Freitas (26%).
Regarding the U.S. House 6th District Democratic Primary, Jennifer Lewis handily won over her challengers, taking 47% of 8,205 votes. A distant second-place was Peter Volosin, with 4,691 votes, or 27%, while Charlotte Moore pulled in just 3,183, or 18%.
Warren County voters cast 391 votes (46%) for Jennifer Lewis; 260 votes (30%) for Peter Volosin; 143 votes (17%) for Charlotte Moore and 65 (8%) for Sergio Coppola.
