Doris Dodson Smedley (1951 – 2025)

Doris Dodson Smedley, 73, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2025, at home.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main Street, Front Royal with Sammy Campbell officiating.  Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Doris was born on June 20, 1951 in Front Royal to the late Floyd Lee Dodson Sr. and Sidney Annabelle Sealock Dodson.

She graduated from Warren County High School, Class of 1969, and was formerly a teacher’s aide at A.S. Rhodes Elementary School. She was a clerk for the J.J. Newberry store and provided daycare in her home for area teachers for over 22 years. She assembled papers for the Washington Post with her husband and was a member of Riverton Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John H. Smedley Sr., her brother, Floyd Lee Dodson, Jr., her grandson, Wesley Smedley, her sisters-in-law, Geneva Mae “Sally” Stogdale, Jimmye Ann Dodson, Kathleen Smedley, Carol Smedley, Phyllis Smedley, and Judith Smedley, and her brothers-in-law, Leonard Smedley, Donnie Smedley, and Benjamin Stogdale.

Surviving are two sons, John H. Smedley Jr. of Front Royal and Christopher Kelley Smedley and his wife Linda of Strasburg; two daughters, Desiree Nicole Smedley of Front Royal and Jessica Lesley Margaret Pinker and husband Jason of Nokesville; two brothers-in-law, Charles Smedley of Front Royal and Winn Smedley of Browntown; 11grandchildren, Brittney, Alyssa, Deadra “DD”, Diane, Evan, Preston, Chase, Alex, Ethan, Noah and Cameron; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Preston Smedley, Evan Smedley, Cord Kindall, Floyd Lee Dodson III, Bradley Smedley, Charles Martin Smedley, Valexity Baggarly and Raelynn Baggarly.

Danny Smedley, Michael Smedley, Will Smedley, Wayne Smedley, Bryan Smedley, and Lee Vickers will be honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, March 6 from 10-11 a.m..
