Eleven Lives Lost in Nine Crashes Over July 4th Holiday Weekend

Published

on

Virginia’s roads turned deadly over the Independence Day weekend as eleven people were killed in nine fatal crashes statewide, according to preliminary data released by the Virginia State Police. The crashes occurred during the four-day July 4th statistical counting period, from July 3 through July 6.

Among the most tragic incidents were two double-fatality crashes. One involved an all-terrain vehicle in Orange County on July 4. The other was a wrong-way, head-on collision on the Express Lanes of Interstate 495 in Fairfax County on July 6. A separate pedestrian fatality also occurred in Buckingham County on July 4.

Other crashes that resulted in fatalities took place in the counties of Amelia, Clarke, Henrico, King William, Prince Edward, and Spotsylvania.

This year’s holiday period marked an increase in fatal crashes compared to 2024 when 10 lives were lost during a longer five-day period.

Law Enforcement Alarmed by Rising Numbers

“Even one fatality is one too many,” stated Colonel Matthew D. Hanley, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police. “Eleven deaths are extremely alarming. These tragedies are preventable. We urge everyone to avoid distractions, slow down, buckle up, and drive sober.”

Virginia State Police were actively participating in Operation CARE (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort), a national traffic enforcement initiative designed to reduce crashes and roadway deaths. Troopers were highly visible on highways and secondary roads throughout the state during the holiday.

Fourth of July Enforcement by the Numbers

Over the course of the holiday weekend, Virginia State Police reported significant enforcement activity:

  • 2,959 drivers were cited for speeding
  • 1,411 were charged with reckless driving
  • 73 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • 505 citations were issued for seatbelt violations
  • 135 citations were issued for child restraint violations

In total, troopers investigated 879 traffic crashes statewide and assisted 701 stranded or disabled motorists.

These numbers reflect a heightened enforcement effort but also point to continued risks on Virginia roadways, especially during busy travel weekends.

New Seatbelt Law Now in Effect

As of July 1, 2025, Virginia law requires all vehicle passengers to wear seatbelts, regardless of seating position. Previously, adults riding in the back seat were not required to be buckled. The change is intended to further reduce preventable injuries and fatalities.

Where the Money Goes

Funds collected from summonses issued by Virginia State Police do not go to the department itself. Instead, they are directed toward court fees and the Virginia Literary Fund, which supports public school construction, educational technology, and teacher retirement programs across the state.

A Preventable Tragedy

The increase in traffic deaths, particularly during a period focused on celebration and family, serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible driving behavior.

Operation CARE, which emphasizes impaired driving prevention, seatbelt use, and safe speeds, will continue throughout the year during other high-travel periods.

For drivers in Virginia and beyond, the message is clear: stay alert, drive responsibly, and never take safety for granted.
