From Crime Scenes to K9 Units: Citizens Academy Opens in May

Warren County residents will soon have a new opportunity to step inside the world of local law enforcement through a hands-on learning program designed to inform and engage the community.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office is launching its Citizens Academy, a 10-week program that offers a closer look at how the agency operates. The academy combines classroom instruction with interactive experiences, giving participants a better understanding of the many roles within the sheriff’s office.

Organizers say the goal is to build a group of informed citizens who can share their experiences and help others better understand law enforcement. The program is designed to offer what officials describe as a behind-the-scenes look at daily operations—an experience they call being “Behind the Star.”

The academy begins May 7, 2026, and will be held every Thursday evening from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sessions will be held in the Public Safety Building Community Room.

Throughout the program, participants will explore a wide range of topics that highlight the work of deputies and staff. These include the history of the sheriff’s office, crime scene processing, and criminal law. Attendees will also learn about defensive tactics, crisis intervention, and see demonstrations involving firearms and K9 units.

In addition to classroom lessons, the academy will feature hands-on activities and agency tours, giving participants a chance to see how different divisions operate in real-life situations.

The program is open to adults ages 18 and older. All applicants must complete an application and pass a background check. Officials note that space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.
