Five Valley Health Hospitals Earn Top 100 Awards from The Chartis Center for Rural Health

Five Valley Health hospitals have been recognized as 2024 Top 100 Hospitals by The Chartis Center for Rural Health.

The Chartis Center for Rural Health completes an annual assessment of rural hospital performance nationwide using publicly reported data on 36 measures of quality, outcomes, patient satisfaction and cost that comprise the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®. Chartis recognizes outstanding performance across these measures and names the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals and Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals in the country based on the results of the assessment.

All four of Valley Health’s Critical Access Hospitals — Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Page Memorial Hospital, War Memorial Hospital, and Hampshire Memorial Hospital — were recognized as being among the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the country for 2024. This marks the third straight year Shenandoah Memorial Hospital has been included in the Top 100 list, making it the only Virginia hospital to make the list three years in a row. Valley Health’s two West Virginia hospitals, Hampshire Memorial Hospital and War Memorial Hospital, were the only two hospitals in the state to be selected for the Top 100 list.

Warren Memorial Hospital, which is larger than Valley Health’s Critical Access Hospitals, was named to the list of Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals in the country for 2024. Hospitals on this list are not federally designated Critical Access Hospitals, which must have 25 or fewer acute care inpatient beds and be located more than 35 miles from another hospital, among other requirements. The hospitals on the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals list are defined as rural based on their location and must have fewer than 200 inpatient beds. Warren Memorial Hospital was one of only four Virginia hospitals to be included on the list.

“This recognition is a testament to the high level of care provided by our caregivers every day,” said Mark Nantz, President and CEO. “Patient care and patient safety are our top priority at Valley Health and we are proud that all of our eligible hospitals have received this recognition. It really speaks to the dedication of our healthcare teams to deliver safe, effective, patient-centered care and our commitment to a healthy community where care is accessible, affordable and exceptional for all.”

The Chartis INDEX uses publicly available data to assess and benchmark the performance of 1,300 Critical Access Hospitals and approximately 800 Rural & Community Hospitals across the United States. The facilities with the 100 highest scores earned a spot on this year’s list. Winchester Medical Center is not included in the INDEX, as it is not located in a rural zip code and has a bed count exceeding 200.

“During an era of profound uncertainty for rural healthcare, the Top 100 rural hospitals continue to provide a unique lens through which we can identify innovation and inspiration for how to deliver high quality care to increasingly vulnerable populations,” said Michael Topchik, National Leader, The Chartis Center for Rural Health.

The Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX® is the industry’s most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance. The INDEX is leveraged nationwide to measure and monitor performance across a variety of areas impacting hospital operations.
