Improvements at I-81/I-66 Interchange Open to Traffic This Week

on

Motorists traveling through the I-81/I-66 interchange in Warren County will soon experience reduced congestion and enhanced safety, thanks to a $7.1 million construction project set to open early Friday morning, July 12, 2024, fully. This two-year project, aimed at alleviating traffic woes at this critical junction, is nearing its final phase.

To wrap up the project, right-lane closures are planned for southbound I-81 from mile marker 301 to 299 on Wednesday and Thursday nights (July 10-11), from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. During these times, contractors will complete painting lane markings and removing concrete barriers. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) emphasizes that these closures are weather-dependent.

The I-81 exit 300 improvement project extends the acceleration lane from westbound I-66 to southbound I-81, providing a more extended merging area for vehicles. Additionally, the project replaces the southbound I-81 bridge over Route 840 (Water Plant Road). These enhancements are expected to reduce the frequent congestion at this interchange significantly.

Despite the contract completion date set for November 2024, the remaining work will involve only shoulder closures, maintaining a work-zone speed limit of 55 miles per hour on southbound I-81 until the project is fully completed.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded Triton Construction Inc. of St. Albans, West Virginia, the $7,140,300 contract in May 2022. Virginia’s SMART SCALE program prioritizes transportation projects based on merit.

Looking ahead, another significant project is slated to begin in late 2024. This initiative aims to widen nearly four miles of southbound I-81 from the southern end of the current project at exit 300 past exit 296 (Route 55/Strasburg). This widening effort is part of the I-81 Corridor Improvement Program (CIP), designed to enhance the entire I-81 corridor. More details on this project can be found at Improve81.org.

Residents and travelers can stay updated on traffic conditions and construction progress through several VDOT resources. Traffic alerts and traveler information are available by dialing 511 or visiting 511Virginia.org. The VDOT Customer Service Center also operates 24/7 to assist with road hazards, transportation questions, and other related inquiries. The center can be reached at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623).

For those active on social media, the VDOT Staunton District maintains a presence on Facebook and X (Twitter). At the same time, VDOT’s statewide accounts can be followed on Facebook, Flickr, X, and YouTube. Further information on various projects and services is accessible via the VDOT website.

As the improvements at the I-81/I-66 interchange come to fruition, drivers can look forward to smoother and safer travels through this busy corridor. The upcoming widening project promises continued enhancements, ensuring the I-81 corridor remains efficient and safe for all who use it.
