James Frederick Leavy, known to all as Jim, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025, in Front Royal, Virginia, a town he recently made home to be closer to his daughter.

James Frederick Leavy

Born in San Diego, California, on June 26, 1936, Jim spent his early years in that coastal city where he would later meet his first wife, Ann Marie Tay. Together, they raised their two children, Michelle and Michael, instilling in them a love of learning and an appreciation for the world around them.

Jim had a brilliant mind and a lifelong passion for discovery. A dedicated electrical engineer, he built a distinguished career in the aerospace industry, spending the last 25 years of his professional life with Honeywell. He was recognized as one of the nation’s foremost experts in designing circuitry capable of withstanding the effects of nuclear radiation—a field that required not only intelligence but also an unrelenting curiosity and problem-solving spirit.

Jim married the love of his life, Pamela (Pam) Griner Leavy, with whom he shared 42 wonderful years until her passing in March 2024. Together, they cultivated a deep love for French culture, a passion that led them to spend a decade of their retirement living in Paris. Whether strolling along the Seine, exploring historic cathedrals, or simply enjoying an espresso at a quiet bistro, they embraced their adopted home with enthusiasm and joy.

Jim’s intellectual pursuits extended far beyond engineering. A voracious reader, he immersed himself in books on countless subjects, but he was particularly drawn to quantum mechanics and religion. His quest for knowledge and spiritual understanding led him to earn a degree in divinity during his retirement years. Throughout his life, he and Pam were active members of the Unitarian Universalist Church, which they attended regularly in their various homes in St. Petersburg, Florida, Paris, France, and The Villages, Florida.

Jim will be dearly missed by his children, Michelle Smeltzer and Michael Leavy, who take comfort in the extraordinary life he lived and the wisdom he imparted. His legacy is one of curiosity, love, and an unyielding pursuit of knowledge.
