Three Flags, One Crater: We’re Going Back

Published

on

When Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon in July 1969, the mission was about science, courage, and national pride. But it was also a race.

Beat the Soviets. Plant the flag. Prove it could be done.

Within three years, the last Apollo astronauts left the moon, and humans have not returned since.

This time, the race looks different.

The next wave of lunar missions is not just about planting flags. It is about building infrastructure — especially near the moon’s south pole, where permanently shadowed craters may hold frozen water.

That ice could be one of the most valuable resources in space. Water can support astronauts, but it can also be split into hydrogen and oxygen to make rocket fuel. That would turn the moon into a possible refueling station for missions deeper into the solar system.

The United States is moving through NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the moon and eventually establish a long-term presence.

China is building its own lunar effort, including plans for a research station with international partners and a crewed moon landing goal around 2030.

India is also in the race. After becoming the first nation to land near the lunar south pole in 2023, India is preparing future missions to study the region more closely.

The old moon race was about arrival.

The new one is about staying.
