Jeanette Margaret “Jean” Smith Dunethan (1938 – 2025)
Jeanette Margaret “Jean” Smith Dunethan, 87, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 22, 2025, at her daughter’s home in Delaplane, Virginia.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. on September 2, 2025, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 120 W Main St., Front Royal, Virginia. A visitation will take place one hour before the service at Maddox Funeral Home. Following the Mass, her burial will take place at Good Hope Cemetery.
Jean was born on July 26, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, and was raised alongside her siblings, Joan, Leroy, Ronnie, Roger, and Theresa, by their parents, the late Emil and Magdalen Funk Weidner. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Gaston Henry Smith (d. 1986), her second husband, James Dunethan (d. 2020), and her great-grandson, Theo.
Her children survive Jean: Guy Smith (Mary Kate) of Manassas and Laura Gossin (Daniel) of Delaplane; her 15 grandchildren, Celia McGovern (John), Colin Gossin, Nicholas Gossin (Katherine), Patrick Gossin, Nancy Galvan (Matthew), Erik Gossin, Christina Mersch (Michael), Bernadette Stahl (Johnathan), Dominic Smith (Katherine), Damian Smith (Eibhilin), Monica Smith, Madeleine Smith, Charlotte Smith, Josephine Smith, and Casey Smith; and her 14 great- grandchildren, Scarlett, Jack, Cormac, Rose, Ronan, Calena, Collette, Benjamin, Daniel, Raphael, Rosalind, Avila, Everett, and Amelia.
Jean was known as “Gramma Jean” to everyone and considered you a friend as soon as you met her. She had a special place in her heart for the poor and downtrodden, loved spending time with her beloved family, and always enjoyed a good Manhattan. She loved God and her Catholic Faith above all else and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
