Landmark Verdict: Virginia Zoo Animals Granted New Beginnings

Published

on

In a groundbreaking case that underscores the importance of animal welfare, Attorney General Miyares’ Animal Law Unit has emerged victorious, securing the future of 71 animals previously housed at the Natural Bridge Zoo. This decision, reached after a six-day jury trial and over ten hours of deliberation, grants Rockbridge County custody of these animals, marking a significant win for animal rights and safety advocates.

The diverse group of animals includes four giraffes, seventeen capuchins, fourteen tortoises, three pythons, one skink, one mini donkey, fourteen macaws, one gibbon, six cotton-topped tamarins, three ground hornbills, six turtles, and one dog. These animals, ranging from the majestic giraffes to the vibrant macaws, will now look forward to a future in environments that prioritize their well-being.

Attorney General Miyares expressed gratitude for the jury’s comprehensive deliberation and acknowledged law enforcement partners’ collaborative efforts in safeguarding these animals’ welfare. “Virginians support clean, safe environments for animals, whether they be personal pets or zoo animals. We are grateful for the jury’s thorough deliberation and thank our law enforcement partners for their assistance,” Miyares stated, highlighting the community’s values toward animal care and protection.

This case represents a victory for the animals involved and sets a precedent for future actions concerning animal welfare in Virginia and beyond. It serves as a reminder of the legal system’s role in upholding the rights and safety of animals, whether in private ownership or public institutions like zoos.

As the post-trial motions are scheduled for April 4 at 2:00 p.m., the Office of the Attorney General remains reserved, noting that the criminal investigation is still open and ongoing. This restraint underscores the complexity of animal welfare legal proceedings and the ongoing commitment to ensuring justice.

This landmark verdict is a pivotal moment for animal welfare advocacy, demonstrating the power of legal intervention in creating safer, more humane conditions for animals. It is a testament to the community’s values and the legal system’s capacity to effect meaningful change.

The granted animals include:

  • 4 Giraffes

  • 1 Mini Donkey
  • 14 Macaws
