Laurel Ridge College: A Beacon for Military-Affiliated Students

Published

on

In an inspiring testament to its unwavering support for military families, Laurel Ridge has been honored with the prestigious Military Friendly® School designation in not one but two significant categories. This recognition, awarded by Viqtory, a veteran-owned small business, places Laurel Ridge in the limelight as a Gold recipient within the small community college category and as a Military Spouse Friendly® School.

The distinction stems from a meticulous evaluation process involving over 1,800 educational institutions across the United States. Participating schools underwent a rigorous assessment, combining public data and comprehensive surveys, to identify those that not only meet but exceed the standard criteria for support towards military-affiliated students. Of the numerous contenders, only 537 were distinguished with special awards, highlighting their exceptional commitment to this noble cause.

The criteria for this accolade are developed with guidance from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council, comprising independent leaders from higher education and military recruitment spheres. These standards are designed to measure a school’s performance across various critical aspects such as student retention, graduation rates, job placement, and support for student veterans, ensuring they have the resources and support needed to succeed academically and beyond.

At the heart of Laurel Ridge’s achievements is its profound dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for military-affiliated students. Sharon Painter, the college’s military benefits official, highlighted the designation as a testament to the college’s commitment to serving its military-affiliated community. The college boasts veterans centers on its campuses, offering spaces where student veterans can find academic advice, access free resources, and enjoy camaraderie with peers.

A notable innovation at Laurel Ridge is the tailored approach to the SDV 100—College Success Skills class, which is mandatory for all new credit students. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by veterans transitioning to civilian and academic life, the college has restructured this course to cater specifically to their needs. This approach not only equips veterans with the skills needed for academic success but also fosters a sense of community among them, enhancing their college experience.

This recognition by Military Friendly® is a clear indication of Laurel Ridge’s commitment to providing quality education and support to the military community. It serves as a beacon of excellence in higher education, setting a benchmark for other institutions to follow in supporting veterans and their families.

Laurel Ridge’s story of support and dedication to military-affiliated students shines as a beacon of hope and commitment, serving as a sterling example for educational institutions nationwide. Their efforts underscore the importance of tailored support and community building in ensuring the success and well-being of those who have served their country.
