Native Son of Northern Virginia Excels in Horror Genre as Burgeoning Author Post COVID-19

Published

Having changed hands multiple times in recent history and rumored to be haunted, Valerie Hill Vineyard & Winery is a gem nestled in the rural outskirts of Stephens City, where its stellar selection of whites and reds and its friendly staff create a warm and welcoming environment for those who know where to find it. Wine is not the only thing they offer. On Saturday, October 25, the winery hosted an author for a book signing. Born in Stephens City, though now residing in North Carolina, David Musser began his career in horror fiction at the onset of COVID-19. Far from formulaic, these page-turners are spiritually driven, exploring the quest for self-knowledge while delving deeply into the reality of sin, guilt, the necessity of atonement, and all the paranormal dimensions that still escape human comprehension.

Built like a wrestler and exuding inexhaustible energy, Musser himself is a biography waiting to happen. One would think an author of horror literature would be grim and taciturn. Not so. With an appetite for extended and intense dialogue, Musser described growing up in a Methodist community where the focus was more upon family and friends and all the value that brings than any invisible presence. It turns out he is the cousin of Front Royal Mayor Lori Cockrell, who speaks fondly and highly of him. Their shared childhood, according to Musser, was characterized by love in an environment where, if there was ever a difference of opinion, voices were raised in excitement, not anger. Many friends and extended relations were present on Saturday to offer support to him and communicate their pride in his success.

Imagine the capacity to look with X-ray vision into anyone’s soul and visualize the most horrible thing he has ever done to somebody, and in unison experience the crime through the victim’s eyes. This is just one of the creative concepts Musser has imagined in his fiction. As the conversation progressed, he shared how AI technology has stimulated his process. Computer programming is his first love, so it is not surprising that he uses AI to check his mechanics when writing and even enjoys inviting AI to adopt the personalities of his characters so he can interact with them. Thanks to the artificial intelligence, he feels even more prepared when he finally submits a project to his editor. He spoke candidly about the obstacles he overcame with dyslexia and personal motivation. He knows himself well, surrounds himself with excellent people, and will likely continue to succeed.
