One disturbing result of legalized cannabis
In states that have legalized cannabis, the use of the drug has become commonplace in households.
But in households with children, a troubling new problem in on the rise. A new report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, surveyed reports on the health effects of cannabis and found that as legalization has proceeded, children become more at risk.
One study showed that 78 percent of all pediatric cannabis poisoning occurred when children swallowed the drug. This suggests that the drug is left in easy reach of children.
Another study showed a dramatic increase in the calls to poison centers because children had been exposed to cannabis. From 2000 to 2013, poison center calls were 2.82 times higher in states where cannabis is legal.
