Open Mic with SOHL Brings a Welcoming “Listening Room” to Downtown Front Royal

Have you ever performed in an art gallery? Now’s your chance. “Open Mic with SOHL” (Sounds of Hope Live) invites performers and listeners of all ages to a warm, supportive evening of music, poetry, stories, and visual art at 114 East Main Street, Front Royal. The gallery setting doubles as a true listening room, where you can see everyone—and everyone can see and hear you.

This open mic is built for beginners and pros alike. First-timers are welcome, and seasoned artists are also encouraged. Organizers make the night simple and fair: each performer gets up to seven minutes (about two songs for musicians), and it’s perfectly fine to use less time. Keeping sets on time means as many as 16 people can share the stage. If the list wraps early, the emcee will hold a drawing for a few encore spots.

Because people of all ages attend, acts must stay “PG.” That means no profanity, derogatory, or sexual content. The goal is to create a welcoming room where families, teens, and adults can enjoy an evening together. Arriving early and staying to the end is part of the culture, too—cheering for fellow performers, making connections between sets, and keeping the atmosphere relaxed and friendly.

Visual artists are especially invited to share “creation stories”—the short tale behind a piece, how it came to be, or what it means. That blend of sound, image, and story suits the gallery, and it helps newcomers feel at ease on stage. Past open mics have included everyone from recording artists to a teenager who has been blind since birth; the common thread is a supportive crowd that listens.

The event is free, thanks to the generosity of the venue and SOHL. Donations of any size help keep the lights on and the doors open. Guests can pitch in by bringing snacks or beverages to share, arriving early or staying late to help with setup and cleanup, and spreading the word—share a link, pass out a postcard, or invite a friend.

Signing up in advance guarantees a spot. The quick online form (“THIS LINK SAYS IT ALL”) is here: https://soundsofhopelive.com/open-mics-hosted-by-sohl.

Practical notes make the night smoother. Time your piece at home so the emcee doesn’t have to cut you off mid-song. Keep your material family-friendly. Bring what you need for your set, and be ready when your name is called. Most of all, plan to enjoy it—this is a space where first-timers can take a deep breath and step up to the mic with a smiling audience before them.

All ages are welcome (performers under 18 must be with an adult). If you have questions about the sign-up or the room, contact the emcee, Mary K. Shapiro, at 202-294-2906. Whether you’re here to sing, read, show a piece of art, or listen, the promise is the same: a thoughtful crowd, a beautiful setting, and a friendly stage. Bring friends and family, bring snacks to share, and bring your curiosity. This is what a community open mic should feel like.
