OPINION: Mystical, Magical Republican Thinking

Published

on

Recently readers of the Royal Examiner have seen a diligent accounting of the problems confronting Warren County. Their digital coverage has been a comprehensive source of information for county citizens trying to dig through the muck and murk that county leadership has produced. A county leadership locked into one mindset has led to our current disastrous condition. Their lack of curiosity and an inability to ask inconvenient questions has resulted in a fiasco. Everyone is aware that a lone voice raising questions years ago was ridiculed; this was highlighted earlier this year when the ex-town council member received an official apology.

Ignoring the dangers of blind, unquestioning acceptance, the Royal Examiner has published several blanket condemnations charging the Democratic Party with deception and malpractice. One article claimed that since ice sheets once covered New York, then the climate is always changing and since the climate is always changing, there is no urgency to address climate change. The author is content to acknowledge the evidence proving that the climate varies while ignoring the scientific observations regarding the unprecedented pace of change that corresponds with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. A simple internet search would reveal that global temperatures are increasing at an unnatural pace. We can measure the inexorable increase of CO2 and global temperatures, and we are living with the effects on rainfall, drought and increasingly intense storms. The arrogance of a dwindling political party that professes to know best because their gut feeling tells them they are right, is leading us to environmental calamity. The fanciful notion that climate scientists warning against climate change are all part of an international conspiracy, and that the handful of scientists denying human impacts whose research is supported by fossil fuel companies have the purest of intentions is an example of dangerous magical thinking.

Examples of Republican absurdities abound. We were led into an invasion of Iraq with forged evidence, scant planning and little insight into the costs and complications. At the same time, the war in Afghanistan was ignored and allowed to devolve into the endless war we are currently engaged in.
