Police: Slick roads cause hundreds of accidents, one fatal

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia State Police say slick roads have caused hundreds of crashes across the state, including one that killed a driver.

State Police Spokeswoman Corinne Geller said Saturday in a written statement that troopers responded to over 500 vehicle accidents and nearly 700 disabled vehicles across Virginia between midnight and 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Geller said a man died in a Greene County crash that occurred on slippery roads. She says the man’s SUV ran off the road, struck another vehicle, then veered further off the road and overturned in a creek.

The victim was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.  Geller did not identify the victim, pending notification of his next of kin.

The snow has moved out of Virginia, but police say driving conditions remained dangerous Saturday evening and they encouraged everyone to stay off the roads.

The National Weather Service said parts of southeast Virginia had received nearly a foot of snow by Saturday afternoon.

Officials have urged residents to stay home so workers can clear the roads.
