Preliminary election results: Butler takes Sheriff race; Mabe ousts Sayre; Tewalt over Tharpe for Mayor; Moore leads in tight court clerk’s race

Mark Butler wins four-way Sheriff race.

Mark Butler outdistanced Jason Poe by about 1800 votes to become the next Warren County Sheriff in a four-way race that saw the third and fourth place finishers, Jorge Amselle (1631) and Mickey Licklider (1588) take over 3,000 votes away from the top two finishers. In the one Warren County Board of Supervisors race in which an incumbent was running for re-election, Walter Mabe defeated incumbent Shenandoah District Supervisor Tom Sayre by nearly 300 votes, 1293 to 1004.

Cheryl Cullers took a three-way race to succeed Linda Glavis as South River District Supervisor, garnering 974 votes to Robert Hupman’s 699 and Leslie Matthews’ 587. Delores Oates defeated former Town Councilman and Vice Mayor Shae Parker 1270 votes to 791 in the North River District Supervisors race. Like Glavis, North River incumbent Dan Murray did not run for re-election.

In the Special Election for Front Royal Mayor, Councilman Eugene Tewalt defeated Hollis Tharpe 1644 to 928. Tharpe was running to complete the mayor’s term he gave up while fighting a massage parlor solicitation charge this spring. That charge was eventually dropped by the Special Prosecutor’s Office. Interim Mayor Matt Tederick will step down to take on the Town Manager’s job being vacated by the resignation of Joe Waltz, effective at the end of the week, also on an interim basis.

And in the three-way race for Clerk of Warren County Circuit Court, former assistant clerk Angie Moore (4085 votes) defeated current Clerk Janice Shanks (3794) and Stephen Jerome (3190).

Thursday night’s totals will change in the next days as provisional ballots are counted. And due to only write in candidates running in the South River District School Board race, that battle between Kristen Pence and David Downes will not be determined by the County Registrar’s Office until Wednesday when all the write in votes are tabulated.

In two uncontested School Board races, Arnold Williams and Ralph Rinaldi were elected to the North River and Shenandoah District School Board seats, respectively.

In other uncontested races John Bell was elected Commonwealth’s Attorney; Sherry Sours was re-elected County Commissioner of Revenue and Acting Treasurer Jamie Spiker was elected to  succeed Wanda Bryant for a full term as Treasurer.
