Samuels Public Library Celebrates the Holidays with a Packed December Calendar

The holiday season is in full swing at Samuels Public Library, where staff are welcoming the community with a full month of festive events for children, families, and adults. From storytime with Santa to interactive crafts and creative programs, the library is offering something for everyone this December.

Adult Reference Managers Kaitlyn Leckliter and Pat Lopreto, affectionately known as the “library ladies,” shared details about the upcoming activities during a recent visit to the Royal Examiner studio.

Holiday Open House – December 13

The library’s Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 13, is one of its biggest events of the season. It’s a free, all-day celebration featuring photos with Santa, live performances, crafts, and more. Families are encouraged to arrive early, as doors open at 10 a.m.

“There will be family portraits with Santa, but guests need to bring their own phone or camera,” said Leckliter. “We’ll have a volunteer available to take the pictures.”

Santa will host a special storytime at noon, and though he won’t be staying all day, he will stick around afterward to hand out candy canes and pose for photos. A trick dog performance, children’s crafts, and a family crafting station will round out the day.

Hands-On Holiday Fun

Throughout December, library visitors will find a variety of themed workshops and activities for all ages:

• Reindeer Food (week of Dec. 9): Children can mix a magical treat to attract Santa’s reindeer to their yard.
• Agamagraph Art (Dec. 16): A creative optical illusion art project where two pictures blend into one, depending on how it’s viewed.
• Gingerbread Ninja Ornaments (Dec. 23): Made from sandpaper—but scented like gingerbread—these creative ornaments are a twist on a holiday classic.

For adults, the library is offering a Winter Paint Night on Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. with no prior experience required. Registration is necessary due to limited space. Another adult-oriented event, Glowforge Ornament Crafting, will be held in Studio 330 on Dec. 19, where participants can design and cut personalized ornaments using the library’s laser cutter.

Literary Celebrations Continue

The library will also recognize the winners of its Holiday Writing Contest at a reception on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Each winning entry will be featured in a keepsake book compiled and designed by library staff.

“People really treasure these books,” said Lopreto. “They’re a wonderful way to celebrate local creativity.”

While regular monthly book clubs take a break in December, a special holiday gathering will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. for current and prospective club members. It’s a chance to preview the upcoming reading list and meet fellow book lovers.

StoryWalk, Studio 330, and More

The library’s outdoor StoryWalk still features Lou the Fire Hydrant, but a new title—If Mice Pulled the Sleigh—is set to debut soon, weather permitting. Future installments will include interactive elements, such as movement challenges or search-and-find prompts between story panels.

Studio 330 continues to attract creative minds through ongoing workshops and clubs, including String Theory, a relaxed gathering for knitting, crocheting, and other fiber arts. “It’s low-pressure and social,” said Leckliter. “People come to learn, chat, and unwind.”

Looking Ahead: Winter Reading Returns

In January, the library will launch its annual Winter Reading Program. This year’s theme aligns with the 2026 Winter Olympics, encouraging participation across all ages—from toddlers to adults—in reading challenges and activities.

The program kicks off in early January with special events, including an Aurora Borealis chalk art program for elementary-aged students.

With a full calendar and activities for every interest, Samuels Public Library is proving once again that it’s more than just a place for books—it’s a hub for community and creativity.
