Samuels Public Library Kicks Off November with Fun Programs for All Ages
Samuels Public Library has an exciting lineup of programs for November, offering everything from themed book clubs and children’s craft activities to open crafting hours in Studio 330. Librarians Pat LoPreto and Grace Green, recently visited the Royal Examiner’s studio to discuss all the library’s offerings for the month. Here’s what’s in store for visitors of all ages.
Special Programs and Holiday Closures
First, a note on holiday hours: the library will be closed on Veterans Day, November 11, and for Thanksgiving, November 28 and 29. Grace and Pat joked about their love for cookbooks, so while taking time off, they remind everyone that the library has an impressive selection of recipes to inspire anyone’s holiday cooking plans.
Events and Activities for Book Lovers
One of the library’s popular monthly gatherings is “Books and Beyond” on November 14, where participants will explore literature under the theme “Celebrations.” Grace noted that these themes help make reading choices more engaging and relatable.
For library members struggling to choose their next read, these themed discussions can simplify the decision-making process, making it easier to pick a book that aligns with a specific theme and to discover new favorite authors or genres.
Open Studio Hours and Crafting at Studio 330
Starting this month, Studio 330, the library’s makerspace, is opening its doors every Thursday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. for walk-in crafting. Patrons can stop by without an appointment and take advantage of Studio 330’s resources, including open crafting tables and various supplies. Throughout November, patrons can also participate in workshops like Crochet a Pumpkin, join the Embroidery Club, or learn the basics of sewing.
Studio 330 is also hosting a special card-making workshop on November 16. It’s completely free, and all supplies are provided, including stamps, paper cutters, and cardstock. This is the perfect opportunity to create personalized holiday or Thanksgiving cards.
Teen and Children’s Programming
The library hasn’t forgotten about its younger visitors. Teens can enjoy “Teens Connect” on November 16, where they can get creative with drawing and storytelling. Those interested in comics can dive into crafting their own cartoon characters and developing storylines.
For children, the library is offering several engaging events this month. Pat highlighted the upcoming tea party with a ballerina on November 19, where kids can dress up and learn the steps from “The Nutcracker.” There will also be a “Master Gardeners” program on November 16, focused on bird and butterfly migration, teaching kids about the habitats and food sources that support these journeys.
For families with toddlers, the library is hosting a toddler nutrition event with Healthy Families of Northern Shenandoah Valley on November 21. This program offers valuable tips on encouraging healthy eating habits.
The Walking Book Club: A Fresh-Air Reading Experience
One of the library’s most unique programs is its outdoor “Walking Book Club.” Situated next to a scenic walkway, this club invites participants to take a leisurely stroll while discussing their favorite books. Although it’s designed to be a relaxing, all-ages event, it’s typically held during the day, so teens might need to wait for school breaks to join in.
More Than Just Books: VHS-to-DVD Transfers and Community Partnerships
Library visitors who have stacks of old VHS tapes are in luck! Studio 330 offers a Memory Lab where patrons can transfer VHS tapes to DVDs—a free, do-it-yourself service that library staff are happy to assist with. The team also welcomes donations of DVDs for community use, helping patrons preserve and revisit cherished memories.
Grace and Pat expressed gratitude for the community’s enthusiasm for the library’s programs, noting that this participation is what helped Samuels Public Library earn recognition as “Library of the Year.” The library’s mission goes beyond books, and with its diverse programs, Studio 330, and community-focused events, it truly offers something for everyone in Front Royal.
As Pat and Grace wrapped up their conversation, they urged everyone to get a library card, emphasizing that it’s free and opens up endless possibilities for learning, creativity, and connection.
