Some parents see online gaming as a way to build social skills
Video games have evolved over the years from solitary sources of entertainment to connected online communities that some parents are now viewing as a positive way to build social interaction, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Children can use the voice capability of games to chat with their friends after school and they can meet new friends online.
When asked whether they preferred games or social media platforms like Instagram or Snapchat, many kids said that they enjoyed playing online games because they were able to interact with others.
According to Psychology Today, studies have shown social benefits of online gaming. Games require social behavior to advance and win. This creates a strong motivation for players to learn the skills needed to interact with their fellow gamers that can then translate to the real world. Cooperation with teams, for example, is widespread in many games and there is some evidence that it can help curb antisocial behaviors and thoughts.
For some children, especially those suffering from difficulties with bullies or other negativity, video games allow for a helpful distraction.
Success with the game and the creation of positive relationships with other players can help reduce anxiety and self-consciousness. Armed with this foundation, children could have the motivation and tools necessary to improve and enjoy other aspects of their lives.
