Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelite’s swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.” (Exodus 13:19)
The highway monument sits beside the road, once its glory could be easily noticed, but now time has gone by and traffic speeds on its way into Culpeper for bargains at one of the Super stores open 24/7. One must be traveling slowly and look to the right and there it is in a madness of timothy, foxtail, clover and different types of grasses almost covering its moment of emplacement. Mother nature is doing its best to hide this interloper. We see these appointments of kindness due to a sadness and loss alongside other roads and highways. Some are complaining to the Highway Departments that these are distracting and could cause accidents, for a lack of a reason.
Within this random chaotic arrangement of clover , weeds, and display of bucolic sent from above, flowers is a subliminal message. The staked unstable monument is a Styrofoam cross
with its head dress of WalMart vinyl chain of floral flowers. It is the cross and those who sat it in the ground must believe that there is a God and that there is hope and that eventually
Why any person would place a cross to be soon cast into the landfill or crushed by an attempt to mow and clear the byways for passing motorists. I could answer that I would have the answers to more of those questions that all of us face from time to time and have to answer, “I don’t know!” and, hope this is enough to have closure.
“A little girl was riding on the airplane across the Midwest to spend the summer with her grandparents. She was reading one of her favorite paperback stories,”Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm” when a young man took the vacant seat next to her. He attempted to start a conversation, “You know on long flights like this that time can pass more quickly if we have conversation. I would like to tell you, “Why there is no God and no heaven and nothing beyond this earth; you live and then you die and that’s it!”
With that the little girl looked up from her book, “Do you know why a horse eats green grass and leaves behind round clumps, the cow eats the same grass and leaves behind round patties and the goat does the same and leaves little pellets?” The young man laughed, “I don’t know.”
The little girl said, “The dimmest farmer knows and I know we have nothing to talk about,” and with that she went back to reading,”Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.”
A Cross for me to carry, on the road of life you see.
I know that I must tarry on to my eternal destiny.
For Jesus has a Crown of Life waiting just for me…

The Cracked Acorn: Burned Food
“Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred.” – Proverbs 15:17
The following is an e-mail from a friend, who forwarded this to me.
“When I was a kid, my Mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago, my Mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned biscuits in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! All my dad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my Mom and ask me how my day was at school. I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that ugly burned biscuit. He ate every bite of that thing…never made a face nor uttered a word about it!
When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my Mom apologize to my dad for burning the biscuits. And I’ll never forget what he said, “Honey, I love burned biscuits every now and then.” Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, “Your Mom put in a hard day at work today and she’s real tired. And besides–a little burned biscuit never hurt anyone!”
As I’ve grown older, I’ve thought about that many times. Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. I’m not the best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries just like everyone else, but what I’ve learned over the years is that learning to accept each other’s faults and choosing to celebrate each other’s differences is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship, and that’s my prayer for you today…that you will learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of God, because in the end, He’s the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where a burnt biscuit isn’t a deal-breaker!
We could extend this to any relationship. In fact, understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship! “Don’t put the key to your happiness in someone else’s pocket–keep it in your own.” So, please pass me a biscuit, and yes, the burned one will do just fine. And PLEASE pass this along to someone who has enriched your life–I just did! Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil–it has no point.
added…a fellow Christian overheard that a couple were having their problems; he chuckled and said that it wasn’t burned biscuits but probably about store bought ones!
The Cracked Acorn: Insurance
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.* Romans 10:13
I love insurance. days may go by but eventually we get an advertisement from like: Mutual of Omaha, or it could be others , by the hundreds, in the vast regions of the USA.
Life insurance, this is misnamed it should be called death insurance, but then who would want to buy it. I have never known an agent that would tell me I had enough. All the TV murder mysteries have lived on plots that someone was “bumped off” so that the villain would reap millions from a Life Insurance policy.
I don’t think that now in this modern age that there is not one person ‘born of woman'(Job 14:1) that does not have some kind of insurance. You must be some kind of a nut, if you dare venture out into the public without coverage or additional coverage or supplemental coverage that covers all other coverages just in case all those companies just could go into bankruptcy.
Space here does not allow me to list all the kinds of insurance offerings there are in the real world. Many of us, I sincerely hope, are not going to need it all, but there is a warm and fuzzy feeling that comes from knowing that you would be totally covered in case a rock fell from the sky or someone slipped and fell in your driveway.
What about heavenly insurance?
I have heard this also called ‘pie in the sky.'(Revelation 21:21..And the street of that city was paved with pure gold.)
If you are like myself, I am leery about someone offering me ‘free’ products or services. Oh, just give me your name and address and good things will happen .
Yes! Good things may happen and I pray that there are a lot of good things out there.
“*…saved.”, from what?, could be the answer to this week’s ACORN
It was years ago, that I presented a short sermon “Lessons Learned. too late!”
This covered 3 basic points:
1) Eternity…the vast ocean of unlimited time,
2) The Plan…,
Our society does not like to remind us that one day we will be sent from here to eternity, in the blink of an eye or heartbeat.
The Plan by God is that He has sent His Son, who has told us what we must do to be citizens of a great heavenly Kingdom.
There will be a judgement for all of us that have lived on the earth.
Assignment: Open any BIBLE and it will point to our short life here; it will easily show the Plan, and to the quick point…it will show the results of what our life will mean in the Judgement.
Lawyer to the Judge. “I wish to appeal my client’s case on the basis of newly discovered evidence.”
Judge: “And what is the nature of the new evidence?”
Lawyer: “Judge, I discovered that my client still has $500 left.”
The Cracked Acorn: Farming
“Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.” – Matthew 13:8-9
“It’s planting time!”
“Whoa! Whoa!, I’ll tell you when it’s planting time!”
“O. K., it’s planting time!”
We all recognize the re-phrasing of the opening of GONE WITH THE WIND. I remember when we had our Sunday lunch and drove into town to line up to see this movie about the Old South.
I was born in what I call the’ Old South’, like GWTW, it does not exist any more. Farming was horses and mules and manual labor was a normal thing. Hay baling required 6 or 7 men to cut and gather and haul the hay to a stationary baling machine, I would have been 5 years old, one of the men gave me a ride around the field, pulled by two horse, gathering the cut hay.
The Bible says everything has a season, and this is still true, This is the first week of June and in Kentucky, corn should be out and wheat, oats and barley are a short time from reaping. Since this was once tobacco country, the plants have all been set out in several acres of rich prime farm land. Cattle, hogs and chicken are doing well. That span of time from 1939 to 1962 is the time I knew only those who farmed the land with a small tractor and implements for plowing and seeding. No farmer today could make a living in that long gone fashioned farming, now it is big time seeding, cultivating and harvesting and hardly a foot touches the ground from seeding to the mills and markets.
The successful farmer has to know all about the seasons and that this is a time for all things to happen. He must put the seed in the ground and wait. If it is all about patience then the farmer must have this one virtue. The good farmer is a person of action and is prepared for the eventualities whether they are good or bad.
Careless soul, oh, heed the warning, For your life will soon be gone; Oh, how sad to face the judgment,
Unprepared to meet thy God. Why so thoughtless are you standing while the fleeting years go by,
And your life is spent in folly?
Oh, prepare to meet thy God.
CLOSING HUMOR: Why did the unwashed chicken cross the road twice?
Because he was a dirty double crosser!
What do you call a sleeping bull?
What has four legs and flies?
What do you get if you cross a cow with an octopus?
A cow that can milk itself.
The Cracked Acorn: Regal Authority
I admit it.. I may watch too much TV, there’s not much on digital antenna programming. It was several weeks ago on channel CW a new program – The Outpost.
It is Sci-Fi and Fantasy, imported. The first episodes were good and I thought I was going to be addicted. I thought it worthy when the Queen of this land of yore had to convince the military that the reasonability she had inherited from her father was going to be of value.
They listened as Queen Rosmund sat on her horse and pledged herself to tasks of merit that would insure that freedom from harm to their families would be assured and that food and safety would always reign in her kingdom. ” I ask for your fidelity to what I am speaking of and that it will always be the first utmost in my mind for each and every one of you. How feel ye?”
It was one of those moments when all the Queen had said hung on the cusp of the morning fog. No one had ever taken the step forward to say such things! One of the front men dismounted and fell prostrated on the ground before the Queen; it was another and then another until a field of them lay before the Queen…they were saying that they choose to die for the Queen, if it so happened.
I missed several weeks because the writers tried to have other subplots to fill the hour. Last week I taped it and saw that the Queen had a visitor from the underworld. Anet ( an evil woman with pointed ears) sought an audience with the Queen. She was granted it and entered the room where the Queen was on her throne. She had the crown and finery of absolute authority. The Queen made a motion for Anet to approach but only within a few feet. Anet went into a speech of how she could bring forward powers that would insure the Queen to conquer all the surrounding enemy tribes. When Anet stepped forward the two armored men at her elbow brought her back, this happened a second time and the men grabbed her shoulders and brought her back, it was not to happen a third time as the Queen said, “Leave!” Anet’s wishes were never to happen.
This evil person’s temper was to be sated somehow, she hid in a corner of the courtyard until late evening when the Queen’s attending ladies came out, and one so young and favored by the Queen wandered over to a bunch of wild flowers and at a moment of admiration of the floral beauty , was daggered by Anet.
We now see Rosmund, the Queen in grief over the body of her friend. What will happen next? Will she seek revenge in some form; one in power must not let this go unnoticed. (I admit that I can’t wait to see what will happen.)
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour –1 Peter 5:8
The Cracked Acorn: Time
“Just a few more days to be filled with praise and to sing the old, old story” – Psalm 39:4,5
Have you ever heard someone say, maybe in a restaurant, “Look over there near the window, that person sits there and stares outside, Wow! That one must have ‘time on their hands.'”
On the radio, the news person, (notice, how I left the he or the she out, Ha!; if it was French…I could have used a word that was either male or female; time has caused us to leave that behind…how about God; is HE/She or the ‘I AM’ ?, must have cause heartburn to the translators (You see, that may wherein lies the reason there are many, many forms …Bible translations on the market.)
Is there a church named THE I AM, or CHILDREN OF THE BLOOD, or FOLLOWERS OF THE LAMB? I don’t know, would have to surf the INTERNET for help,,,if such a church is out there. Maybe, I should learn texting and find out if anyone can answer this question.
Sorry, I drifted from the straight and narrow. “Yes! The old thing that will level the playing field for all of us, politicians, quadruple killers, planned or other wise, Time will get everyone, no one has a GO TO Jail (TIME) card to let them escape from the scythe carrier to let us “Live, forever!”…on the wonderful God created Earth. Knowing Olfry will not help, either.
When I was a first-order stargazer there was a need to note certain heavenly stars for position and have an accurate time-keeper. We had to know TIME to a fraction of a second, when quartz clocks arrived… it reported TIME to the milliseconds and soon there after another replacement for our faithful chronometer now to the microsecond. News the other day noted that it was possible to capture TIME to the billionths of a microseconds… now it was it was time, to report , we can say, “TIME is at last, close enough for Government work!” TIME can be sold in a bottle, at all the stores, but be careful when you uncork , there may be lots of side effects.
TIME has been good to me; I have never regretted when I went down the church aisle and said, “I now believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; baptize me.”
Years ago, I heard a preacher mention that ‘time’ exists only for us mortals, eh, ? Many moments when I was idle and looked at this wonderful country we have been blessed with and should appreciate more, that if we took away time, what would be left, we could not exist without this ingredient in our lives, but we sing hymns about heaven and how wonderful it will be there, eventually for all of us…but there is no time there…what will we do? there? Has time disappeared and been replaced by eternity. The same preacher went on to allay any fears that I might have about ‘time gone’ in heaven, that we will be praising God and will not even notice that TIME is gone, forever.
It is About Time: (from Readers Digest)
A few weeks? after the death of my father-in-law, I found my seven-year-old son crying in bed. His grandmother had died the previous year, and he was taking it all very hard. “You know, Kyle,” I said, “When we die, we’ll get to see Grandma and Grandpa again in heaven.” With tears spilling down his face, Kyle cried, “That’s easy for you to say. You don’t have that long!”
The Cracked Acorn: Am I Crazy?
“As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marveled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.” (Matthew 9:32-34)
One of our adopted sons was a delayed learning child and eligible for school programs that required him to meet with a psychiatrist and a psychologist, all needed for education. The Washington area has a large market for counseling psychology and mental health problems, but you may have to wait several weeks for an appointment.
Consider the following from WMAL Radio…Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in , “Roger Goes to the Psychiatrist.”
“Good morning, Roger and how are you?”
“I am happy and really love life and I can’t really explain it to you !”
“Well this is most encouraging and I can see that your visits are paying off for you, and is there something that has given you this new lease on life?”
“Yes, doctor! It is because I have fallen in love with someone.”
“Oh this is good news, with a woman?”
“Yes doctor and her name is Stephanie!”
“What a coincidence, Roger, that’s the name of my wife.”
“I know and I can’t stand the thought of you touching her, and I want to kill you, NOW!”
“You are doing so well and I understand your love for my wife, but this is most inconvenient that you want to kill me , at this moment; could you pop by on Wednesday at 2 o’clock and kill me then ?”
“Yes, doctor, I can do that.”
“Goodbye for now , Roger , you are doing so well, I can’t wait to see you again on Wednesday.”
The Great Physician now is near, The sympathizing Jesus; He speaks the drooping heart to cheer, Oh, hear the voice of Jesus!
His name dispels my guilt and fear, No other name but Jesus; Oh, how my soul delights to hear The precious name of Jesus! (from SACRED SELECTIONS)
A last jab at psychology: Once I had multiple personalities, but now we are feeling well.
I don’t suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute.
I used to be indecisive. Now I’m not sure.
The best thing about being schizophrenic is that I’m never alone.
Just because you are paranoid doesn’t mean people aren’t out to get you!
Hypochondria is the only illness that I don’t have.
