The First Long-Distance Phone Call Came With Receipts

Published

on

When the telephone finally traveled a real distance, Alexander Graham Bell faced a problem: How could he prove it actually worked?

His solution was simple. Keep a transcript.

On Oct. 9, 1876, Bell sat in an office of the Walworth Manufacturing Company on Kilby Street in Boston. His assistant, Thomas A. Watson, was about two miles away in Cambridgeport, connected to Bell by a telegraph wire stretched between the two locations.

Seven months earlier, Bell had spoken the words that became part of American history: “Mr. Watson, come here.” Watson heard him, but he was only in another room of the same building.

The October experiment was different. Bell and Watson tried to carry on a conversation across open ground and over a distance that would show the telephone could be more than an interesting laboratory invention.

And they didn’t just talk.

The two men reportedly spent hours testing the connection, speaking in normal voices and even whispering. Each man wrote down what he said and what he heard from the other end.

Those written records provided something Bell badly needed: evidence.

They later printed the transcripts side by side so people could compare them. The words recorded in Boston closely matched those written down in Cambridgeport, helping demonstrate that Bell’s telephone really had carried a conversation over the wire.

It was an important step in turning the telephone from an experimental curiosity into a technology that could connect people across distances.

Today, a two-mile telephone call hardly sounds impressive. We routinely speak face-to-face by video with people thousands of miles away without thinking much about the technology.

But in October 1876, hearing another person’s voice travel a couple of miles through a wire was extraordinary.

And when Bell needed to convince a skeptical public that it had really happened, he came prepared with the 19th-century version of receipts.
