The Transformative Power of Awe

Published

on

Awe is a profound emotion, one that arises in moments when we encounter something so vast and extraordinary that it transcends our everyday experience. It’s the sense of wonder we feel in the face of the sublime. Whether it’s the grandeur of nature or the moral beauty of human courage, awe leaves an indelible mark on our hearts and minds.

According to psychologist Dacher Keltner, author of Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder, awe is universal across cultures and deeply human. While many associate awe with natural spectacles—towering mountains, endless oceans, or a breathtaking sunrise—human actions can also spark it. A 2017 study revealed that people often experience awe when witnessing acts of moral purity, such as selfless courage, extraordinary kindness, or enduring strength. The birth of a child or acts of sacrifice for others is among the moments that move us most deeply. Interestingly, awe is never linked to material wealth or possessions.

Awe’s Impact on the Body and Mind

The benefits of awe extend far beyond a fleeting moment of wonder. Studies suggest that awe has measurable physical and psychological effects. In times of acute or chronic stress, awe can reduce tension and alleviate symptoms like headaches or insomnia. More importantly, awe provides a sense of meaning and fosters feelings of social connection.

In a 2017 study, people who experienced awe became less self-focused and more likely to help others. This outward orientation makes awe a powerful force for building community and empathy. Research also links awe to spiritual experiences, sometimes triggering belief in the supernatural. A 2013 study published in Psychological Science found that awe-inspired feelings of spirituality and a connection to something greater than oneself.

Awe as Nourishment

Keltner likens awe to essential nourishment. Just as our bodies thrive on good food, restful sleep, and meaningful connections, awe rejuvenates our spirit. “Our bodies respond to healthy doses of awe-inspiring nature as we respond to a delicious and nutritious meal…we feel nourished, strengthened, empowered, and alive,” Keltner writes.

In a world dominated by daily routines and distractions, seeking moments of awe may be as vital to our well-being as any physical or emotional practice. Whether through nature, art, or witnessing humanity at its best, awe reminds us of the beauty and wonder surrounding us, waiting to be discovered.
