VDOT: I-66 Outside the Beltway lane closures
WHAT’S HAPPENING ON I-66
Construction activities progressed in February along the I-66 Outside the Beltway corridor. Clearing work is most visible at the Route 28, Route 50, and Route 123 interchanges. Work of note in February included:
- Removal of old noise wall between Route 123 and Jermantown Road to make room for construction of a new retaining wall and replacement noise wall
- Bridge pier foundation work at Route 234 Business, Bull Run Drive, Route 28, and I-495
- Continued progress on pedestrian box culverts at the Route 123 interchange
- Crews continued corridor-wide roadway maintenance, with lane re-striping, hand-filling potholes, and repairing damaged guardrails as needed and weather allows.
UPCOMING TRAFFIC CHANGES AT ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) INTERCHANGE
The Route 123 interchange is being reconstructed to improve safety and allow access to the future express lanes from both directions of I-66. These improvements require a series of traffic pattern changes during construction, the first of which will be implemented this spring.
The loop ramp from northbound Route 123 to I-66 West will be removed in the coming weeks.
These drivers will access I-66 West by turning left at a temporary traffic light and using new roadway to join the existing ramp from southbound Route 123 to I-66 West. Drivers traveling south on Route 123 will need to be alert for the new traffic signal.
Drivers should expect additional changes as work progresses at the interchange. Additional details will be released in the coming weeks.

CONSTRUCTION AT E.C. LAWRENCE PARK
Traffic lights are being removed from Route 28 to reduce congestion and improve safety in this busy corridor. As part of this project, the entrance to the ball-fields at E.C. Lawrence Park will be moved.
Beginning in late summer 2019, a new park entrance road from Stonecroft Boulevard, located to the north, will provide access to the existing parking lot. The current park entrance on Route 28 will then be closed. The current traffic light at Route 28 will remain in place temporarily to accommodate detours needed for additional Route 28 construction. Later, in 2020, Stonecroft Boulevard will be connected to Poplar Tree Road by a new bridge being built over Route 28.
Removal of all four signals between Westfields Boulevard and Lee Highway (Route 29) is scheduled to be complete by late 2020, providing relief to Route 28 drivers well ahead of the express lanes opening in December 2022.
Over the past few months, tree clearing, grading and drainage work, and utility relocations have occurred for the new park access road. Grading and utility work will continue this spring. Click here for additional information.

SAFETY MESSAGE
Traffic patterns at interchanges and along the I-66 corridor will change periodically over the next four years as construction progresses.
Slow down and pay close attention to roadway signs and lane markings as you and other drivers adjust to new traffic patterns.
