Your Personal Mission Statement: A Guide to Getting What You Want Out of Life

Published

on

Many people have heard the saying, If you dont know where youre going, you probably wont get there. But knowing where you want to go in life can be difficult without a clear sense of purpose.

One way to gain that clarity is by creating a personal mission statement—a simple statement that defines what matters most to you and guides your decisions.

According to leadership trainer Laurie Beth Jones, author of The Path: Creating Your Mission Statement for Work and Life, developing a mission statement can change how people see their goals, priorities, and daily actions.

A personal mission statement acts as a compass. It provides a foundation for deciding what activities deserve your time and energy and helps define who you are and what you want your life to represent.

Experts say the statement should be short, clear, and easy to remember. Ideally, it should be something you can repeat to yourself quickly.

History offers examples of simple but powerful missions. Abraham Lincoln’s goal was to preserve the Union, while Franklin D. Roosevelt focused on ending World War II. Their missions were straightforward and widely understood.

When creating a personal mission statement, remember that your job is not your mission. Careers can change over time. Likewise, roles such as parent, spouse, or employee are important parts of life but do not necessarily define a person’s broader purpose.

Instead, a mission statement focuses on the impact you want to have on others and the values you want to live by.

To begin, consider a few key questions:
What inspires you?
How do you see your best self?
What strengths or resources do you have to share with others?

By reflecting on these ideas, you can craft a statement that captures what you want your life to stand for.

It is also important to remember that missions can evolve. As people grow, gain experience, and face new opportunities, their sense of purpose may shift.

The goal is not perfection but direction, creating a clear guiding principle that helps shape the choices you make each day.

With a thoughtful mission statement in mind, it becomes easier to move forward with purpose and intention.
