YOVASO Summer Retreat at JMU Offers Teens Leadership and Safety Training

Virginia teens looking for a mix of summer fun and real-world skills will have a unique opportunity this July at James Madison University.

The Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety (YOVASO) is hosting its annual Summer Leadership Retreat from July 16-19 in Harrisonburg. The four-day event is designed for students entering high school this fall, offering a blend of leadership training, safety education, and social activities.

This year’s theme, “YOVASO Carnival,” adds a playful twist to serious topics such as safe driving and decision-making. Organizers say the goal is to help teens build confidence while learning how to make smarter choices on the road.

Participants will take part in a variety of activities, including workshops, interactive safety demonstrations, and presentations from guest speakers. Highlights include a motivational session from TEEN TRUTH, a multimedia trivia gameshow, and hands-on experiences with organizations such as the Virginia State Police, Virginia Department of Transportation, and DRIVE SMART Virginia.

Teens will also have the chance to try distracted driving simulators and explore possible career paths in public safety, education, and health care.

Beyond the educational side, the retreat offers plenty of time for fun and connection. Evening activities include a talent show, themed socials, and a carnival-style competition inspired by “The Amazing Race.”

“The YOVASO Summer Leadership Retreat is more than learning safe driving; it’s about teens inspiring teens,” said Callie Toler, this year’s retreat director. “Through hands-on activities with VSP troopers, YOVASO staff, and engaging presenters, teens gain skills, confidence, and the chance to make a real difference among their peers.”

The program is open to rising ninth graders through graduating seniors. Students can attend individually or as part of a school, church, or community group.

The cost is $15 per student, with a team rate available. Registration includes meals, lodging, materials, and event gear.

Organizers say space is limited, and registration will close June 19.

YOVASO is Virginia’s peer-to-peer education and prevention program focused on teen driver and passenger safety, with membership open to schools and youth groups across the state.
