‘River Rocks and Wet Socks’ Stream Study at Shenandoah River State Park, Aug. 31
Families can roll up their sleeves and explore the shallows during River Rocks and Wet Socks on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025, from 1–2 p.m. at the Raymond R. “Andy” Guest, Jr. Shenandoah River State Park (350 Daughter of Stars Dr., Bentonville, VA 22610). The program meets at the canoe launch.
Participants will wade along the river’s edge to collect macroinvertebrates—small creatures like stoneflies, mayflies, and crayfish—and learn how these animals help scientists measure water quality. Park staff will guide the search and explain what each find says about the health of the Shenandoah River.
This all-ages program is hands-on and a little splashy. Plan to wear shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting wet, and be ready for slippery rocks and tiny critters. No prior experience is needed.
- Fees: Standard park parking/admission fee applies; no extra program fee.
- Registration: Not required.
- Accessibility: Parks are for everyone. Please let staff know if you need special accommodations.
