New surveys suggest that while many Americans are open to AI’s gift-giving advice, it might come with some unintended consequences.

AI’s Role in Valentine’s Day Shopping

According to the Pew Research Center, nearly 50% of Americans believe AI can help them find the ideal gift for their loved ones. But this trust in technology comes with a catch: people are spending more—and some are going into debt.

  • A Debt.com survey found that 65% of shoppers are willing to spend extra to secure the “perfect” gift.
  • 1 in 4 will even finance their Valentine’s Day purchases, according to Kiplinger.com.

The Cost of Love

Valentine’s Day is already a pricey holiday. The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans will spend an average of $185 this year. Spending trends vary based on relationship length:

  • Those in new relationships (two years or less) splurge the most, averaging $247.
  • Couples in long-term relationships (10 years or more) spend less, about $189.

And don’t forget the pets—gift spending for furry friends is expected to hit $40.

Classic Gifts Still Reign

Despite AI’s recommendations, traditional gifts like flowers, candy, and jewelry remain the most popular choices. These classics might explain why, after all the tech hype, most shoppers end up with tried-and-true options.

A Word of Caution

While AI can suggest creative or unique ideas, it can’t replace personal thoughtfulness. Your loved one might appreciate a gift that reflects your shared memories or their specific interests—something AI may not capture.

So, if you’re tempted to ask AI for advice this Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to add a little heart to your decision. After all, the best gifts come from the one thing no robot can replicate: your love.
