Big Beautiful Bill, Part II

Published

on

Sections 30001 to 30004 cuts money to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as well as leftover unspent money that was meant for making apartment buildings greener. Closes down a fund the SEC used for projects, except for paying whistleblowers.

Sections 40001 to 40011 are about transportation and science. There is a lot here and there is both money added to programs and a lot of money taken away. Some of the key fundings are the Coast Guard and a huge boost to the FAA to update air traffic controlling and airports. This one is interesting aspect and might be one reason Elon Musk was upset, space companies will have to pay fees when they launch or return rockets and spacecraft. These fees help the government cover the cost of regulating spaceflight and improving safety systems (also an important note to remember, this bill does not say what is new and what is already law. This may have always been in place). It gives 10 billion dollars to NASA for missions to the moon and Mars. Now for the cuts. It eliminates fines for car companies if their cars don’t meet fuel efficiency standards. Money not spent on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the aviation fuel and low-emission technology program and the Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund are all canceled and returned.

Sections 50101 to 50104 are about natural resources. While this is a long section with lots of fancy words, its simple. Start drilling for more oil. It put requirements on the Secretary of the Interior to give more leases. Also start more mining for coal, up to 4 million more acres and reduces the rate miners pay.

Starting with 50301 it deals with land. It is meant to boost logging by requiring national forests and BLM land to lease millions of more acres for lumber. Section 50302 starts with green energy. Wind and solar farms on public land need to pay rent and wind farms that help recreational areas or farms can get a discount. It takes back money not spent from the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 on national parks and BLM land. Finally, it gives 150 million to celebrate the nations 150-year birthday next year.

Section 50401 starts with energy. While looking for key works like things that are different it does say it cancels a previous rule that required the government to sell oil from the SPR, so now there is no mandatory sale of the reserve’s oil. Before this change, the law required the government to take oil out of the reserve and sell it under certain conditions. Now, that requirement is canceled. So, the government is no longer obligated to sell oil from the reserve and can keep it unless they decide otherwise. Supposedly this gives the government more flexibility to decide when and if to sell oil, which could help maintain energy security by ensuring there’s always a backup supply of oil available. Most of the rest just seems to fund the Department of Energy to update everything and improve energy production.

I think that is enough for now, my mind hurts. I will try to tackle a bit more later, but it is Saturday so how knows. I hope this helps a little bit. I am going to read it anyway for class so I felt I might as well share.
