South Warren Ruritan Club Awards Three $2,000 Scholarships at Annual Picnic

The South Warren Ruritan Club awarded three $2,000 scholarships on Aug. 12 during the club’s annual family picnic and awards ceremony in Front Royal. Honorees, family members, and guests filled the gathering as the club recognized local graduates for their hard work and community spirit.

Club President Rick Logan presented the awards. The J. Berkeley Pomeroy Memorial Scholarship went to Gabriel Tweedie, a graduate of Skyline High School. The Lloyd Baltimore Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Sean Flynn, a Warren County High School graduate. The Edgar R. Baldwin Memorial Scholarship went to Mikaela Hamilton, also a Warren County High School graduate.

Each scholarship provides $2,000 to help graduates take their next steps after high school. The support can help cover early costs such as tuition deposits, books, tools, technology, or other start-up needs for college or career training. The club established these memorial scholarships to honor their namesakes and to keep the tradition of investing in local youth strong year after year.

Funding for the awards comes from the club’s annual Spaghetti Dinner and sponsorships. More than 60 local businesses and individuals contribute to the fundraiser each year, turning a community meal into real help for students. Those donations, paired with the volunteer hours that power the event, make the scholarships possible.

The picnic and awards ceremony gave families a chance to celebrate the graduates and thank supporters who made the assistance possible. The setting also highlighted what the Ruritan mission looks like at the local level: neighbors working together to improve their community, one practical project at a time. The scholarship program is a cornerstone of that effort, reflecting the belief that investing in students benefits the whole county.

This year’s recipients represent two area high schools and a wide circle of teachers, mentors, friends, and relatives who encouraged them along the way. As the honorees move on to their next chapters, the scholarships serve as a reminder that the community is behind them.

The South Warren Ruritan Club expressed appreciation for the donors and volunteers whose steady support keeps the program strong. With continued participation in the Spaghetti Dinner and sponsorships, the club plans to keep awarding scholarships to future classes of graduates.

For many families, even modest assistance can make an immediate difference at the start of the school year. By focusing on local students and local fundraising, the club keeps every dollar close to home—supporting the next generation while strengthening community ties.

Congratulations to Gabriel Tweedie, Sean Flynn, and Mikaela Hamilton on their achievements and to the South Warren Ruritan Club for another successful year of scholarship awards.
