When Children Cannot See Clearly, They May Not Know to Say So

Published

on

A child who needs glasses may never complain about blurry vision.

That is because children often assume everyone sees the world the same way they do. If blurred words, fuzzy faces, or trouble seeing the board have always been normal, they may not realize anything is wrong.

That is one reason August is recognized as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, an annual observance promoted by Prevent Blindness as families prepare for the new school year.

According to an analysis of national survey data by Prevent Blindness, only about 53% of children in the United States had received a recent vision screening.

That means many students may return to class with an undetected problem that could affect reading, concentration, coordination, and classroom performance.

Some eye conditions cause few obvious symptoms. Others may show up in ways parents and teachers mistake for behavior or learning problems.

A child with poor vision may sit too close to the television, hold books close to the face, squint, rub their eyes, avoid reading, lose their place on the page, complain of headaches, or struggle to copy work from the board.

They may also appear distracted or frustrated during schoolwork.

Vision screenings can identify possible problems, but they are not the same as a full eye examination. A screening may show that a child needs further testing, while an eye doctor can diagnose the cause and recommend treatment.

Early care matters because many childhood vision problems are treatable when detected early.

Glasses, patching, therapy, or other treatment may help improve sight and prevent long-term damage. Left untreated, some conditions can interfere with learning and may lead to permanent vision loss.

Parents should not wait for a child to ask for help.

A routine vision screening or eye exam before school begins can catch problems a child may not know how to describe.

Clear vision does not guarantee classroom success, but poor vision can make every school task harder.

For many children, a simple pair of glasses may be one of the most important school supplies they receive.
