Weight-Loss Drugs May Help Protect Against Atrial Fibrillation

Published

on

Popular weight-loss and diabetes drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists may have another potential benefit: a lower risk of developing atrial fibrillation, the most common type of abnormal heart rhythm.

Research presented at Heart Rhythm 2026 found that patients who started a GLP-1 drug were less likely to develop atrial fibrillation than a matched group who did not take one.

The study included more than 13,000 patients.

Atrial fibrillation, often called AFib, causes the heart to beat irregularly and sometimes rapidly. It can raise the risk of stroke, heart failure, and other complications.

The researchers also found that patients taking GLP-1 drugs had better overall survival.

One of the more surprising findings was that the lower risk of AFib did not appear to depend entirely on weight loss.

The association persisted even among patients who lost little weight and, in some cases, among those who gained weight.

That raises the possibility that the drugs may affect heart rhythm through mechanisms beyond weight reduction alone.

Among the medications studied, semaglutide showed the strongest association with a lower risk of AFib.

Patients age 65 and older appeared to see the greatest benefit, with a risk reduction of about 44 percent.

Atrial fibrillation affects more than 40 million people worldwide and contributes to hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations in the United States each year.

Study lead author Dr. Kenneth Bilchick, a cardiologist at the University of Virginia, told Healio that the results were stronger than researchers had expected.

The findings do not prove that GLP-1 drugs directly prevent atrial fibrillation, and more research will be needed to understand why the association appeared and whether it holds up in broader groups of patients.

Still, the study adds to growing interest in how GLP-1 medications may affect cardiovascular health beyond their use for diabetes and weight loss.
